{"id":25002,"date":"2023-03-06T09:44:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T09:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/03\/06\/mike-ahey-speed-king-who-ruled-ghanas-track-and-field-in-early-post-independence-era\/"},"modified":"2023-03-06T09:44:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T09:44:11","slug":"mike-ahey-speed-king-who-ruled-ghanas-track-and-field-in-early-post-independence-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/03\/06\/mike-ahey-speed-king-who-ruled-ghanas-track-and-field-in-early-post-independence-era\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Ahey: Speed king who ruled Ghana\u2019s track and field in early post-independence era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>In commemoration of the 66th Independence Day and Ghana Month Celebration, the Akan brands of the Multimedia Group, have decided to take Ghanaians down memory lane and re-tell the stories of some prominent Ghanaians who have excelled in diverse fields.<\/p>\n<p>The spotlight today will be on former sprinter and long jumper, Michael Kofi Ahey, who won multiple awards and made Ghana proud in his career path.<\/p>\n<p>His life journey commenced at the rising of the sun on 22nd November 1939.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"312\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Michael-Ahey-and-Dr-Nkrumah.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-2222790\"><figcaption>Late former President Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Michael Kofi Ahey (Ghana Olympic Committee Facebook page)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kofi Ahey competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics, the 1968 Summer Olympics, and in the 1972 Summer Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Ahey\u2019s 1962 long jump national record of 8.19 metres was smashed just in 2014 by Ignatius Giasah at the Abuja Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>He was conspicuously axed from 15 inductees into the first-ever Sports Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tournaments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michael Ahey had the following podium finishes at major championships:<\/p>\n<p>Competed in the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>He had some experience in the 100 meters with a time of 10.49 +0.5 at the Estadio Ol\u00edmpico, Ciudad de in M\u00e9xico on13th Oct 1968.<\/p>\n<p>He did the 100 metres in 10.2secs in Kumasi on 4th September 1964 and leaped the Long Jump event at 7.97 meters in Ibadan, Nigeria on 5th May 1972.<\/p>\n<p>He again jumped 8.05 m at Perth in Australia on 26 Nov 1962.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"626\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-412.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-2222789\"><figcaption>Credit: Ghana Olympic Committee Facebook page.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The multi-talented sportsman ran the 4\u00d7100 meters Relay and his squad did 39.87 at the Estadio Ol\u00edmpico, Ciudad de M\u00e9xico on 19 Oct 1968.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal Bests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He came first in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games Long Jump event and came second in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games 4\u00d7110 yards Relay with the likes of Michael Okantey, Bonner Mends and Bukari Bashiru.<\/p>\n<p>He also came second in the 1970 British Commonwealth Games 4\u00d7100 metres Relay with Edward Owusu, George Daniels, and James Addy.<\/p>\n<p>Ahey also finished fourth in the long jump at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100 yards at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mike was a gold medallist at the 1962 Australia Commonwealth Games, he also won silver in the 4 by 100 relay race at the same event.<\/p>\n<p>He is also a three-time Olympian, who competed in the 1964 Tokyo Games, the 1968 Mexico Games and the 1972 Munich Games.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large td-caption-align-https:\/\/www.adomonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-413.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-413-1024x717.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-2222791\"><figcaption>Young and Vibrant Michael on the tracks.
