The case of disabled Esther Abiona is just another sad tale of bad preparation from the side of the United Tertiary Matricilation Examination in Nigeria. The 18 year old teenager registered and passed the 2022 UTME exam. She was denied admission for her dream course, Medical Laboratory Science at FUOYE despite hitting the cut-off.<\/p>\n
Esther decided to register for the exam again in 2023. She paid all the necessary dues electronically to Jamb. However, when she arrived at a registration centre at the Redemption camp in Mowe, she could not do the biometric registration because she did not have 10 fingers. <\/p>\n
She was told by the lady in the camp to go to their headquarters in Abeokuta due to Jamb\u2019s new directives. She returned home to her mother who gave her money to go to Abeoukuta. <\/p>\n
At the headquarter, the story was the same, the officers at the camp to register her but it failed each time. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey tried to do the biometric, but the system kept rejecting the registration, stressing the I needed to capture my 10 fingers\u201d.<\/p>\n
Esther who suffered an infection in her right hand when she was 12 was told to go to Abuja to register for the exam. She pleaded and cried but there was nothing the officers could do. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat is absurd. If they wanted me to go to Abuja, they shouldn\u2019t have taken the N5,700 I paid through their server. They shouldn\u2019t have generated an e-PIN for me. They shouldn\u2019t have captured me. Now, they have dashed my hopes. The registration has closed and I have been denied the opportunity to register for the examination simply because I have five fingers. How fare is that?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
