Customers of some of the collapsed banks have criticized former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor for not heavily criticizing the government for the way and manner banks collapsed during the recapitalization exercise.<\/strong><\/p>\nAccording to the customers, Dr Duffuor whose uniBank was of the banks that went under has not been aggressive in exposing the flaws in the modus operandi adopted by the government in clean up the financial sector.<\/p>\n
Dr Duffuor, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, is seeking to be the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 general elections.<\/p>\n
He will be contesting in the internal polls of the NDC against former President John Dramani Mahama, former Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Kojo Bonsu and Businessman Ernest Kobea.<\/p>\n
Mr Mahama launched his campaign in Ho, Volta Region on Thursday, March 2 to contest in the internal elections of the largest opposition party.<\/p>\n
The 2020 presidential candidate of the NDC said among other things that \u201cWe will strictly enforce prudence and responsibility in the management of public finances by cutting out waste and ostentation, which have become commonplace under this administration.<\/p>\n
\u201cTogether, we will build the Ghana we want. We shall restore faith in our almost collapsed financial system and embark on sweeping reforms at the Bank of Ghana.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe shall actively pursue policies to ensure robust local participation in our banking, financial, telecommunications, mining, agriculture, agribusiness and manufacturing sectors. This will be anchored on our plan to grow the economy and create sustainable employment for our youth,\u201d Mr Mahama said.<\/p>\n
The customers of the failed banks have thrown their support behind him.<\/p>\n
They said in a statement that \u201cIt\u2019s not about creating an economy that favours only foreign investments and businesses, neither is it only about building a financial service sector to satisfy the business interest of a few Ghanaians holding political power.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe that had Ghanaians renewed John Dramani Mahama\u2019s mandate in 2016, management of the banking sector clean up under his leadership would have been better carried out to save lives and jobs, secured peoples investments and businesses whilst at the same time increased business confidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe however, on the contrary, express much regret on the part of the former finance minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor \u2013 a victim of the bank closures for his extreme muteness and restraint in criticizing the current government for the mismanagement of the sector and the economy at large.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndeed, Ghana at this time needs \u2018experience but not experiment\u2019. We therefore call on
delegates of the\u00a0National Democratic Congress (NDC)\u00a0to give the former president, John
Dramani Mahama a resounding victory in their upcoming presidential primaries to enable him rescue this country from the corrupt and incompetent NPP government to build the Ghana we want together.\u201d<\/p>\n
