{"id":2307,"date":"2023-01-06T12:09:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T12:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/01\/06\/university-of-maiduguri-students-protest-against-hike-in-school\/"},"modified":"2023-01-06T12:09:28","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T12:09:28","slug":"university-of-maiduguri-students-protest-against-hike-in-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/01\/06\/university-of-maiduguri-students-protest-against-hike-in-school\/","title":{"rendered":"University Of Maiduguri Students Protest Against Hike In School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID, Borno State, have taken to the streets to protest against the hike school fees.<\/p>\n<p>Suleiman Muhammad Sarki, the National Vice Principal President on Special Duties of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), said that if the management does not return to the previous school fees, mother of all protests would be experienced.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the hike in fee would pursue great number of the Nigerian students into insurgency, banditry and kidnapping as they will drop out from school because they are were unable to pay.<\/p>\n<p>Sarki said he paid N29,830 last year but was increased to N74,000 this year. He does not have such money to pay and he has to quit his studies.<\/p>\n<p>The recent hike in school feed by some Nigerian varsities did not come to him as a surprise but as an affront to the war against insurgency, banditry and kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed confidence that the hike of the fee would be reviewed as he pleaded with the government, elder statesmen, relevant stakeholders in the education sector, traditional rulers, Ulama, and priests to prevail on the situation to reverse the decision on the hike in school fees.<\/p>\n<p>They expect that in the next two weeks, those concerned would intervene on the fee increment to be withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>He said they will mobilise students across the country on this mother of all protests after the two weeks elapse, if nothing is done on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Maina Gimba, the Dean of Students Affairs of the university, said that the increase is the least in the varsity.
