Babu Owino, a member of parliament for Embakasi East, has called on the National Treasury to release student borrowers\u2019 HELB loans quickly.<\/p>\n
Owino estimated that 327,000 university students require financial aid to continue their study.<\/p>\n
\u201cHELB needs to act quickly and give aid to its 327,000 members. Education\u2019s goal is to replace a closed mentality with an open one, \u201csaid Owino.<\/p>\n
Should they continue to deny fellow comrades this basic freedom, Owino continued, \u201cWe will soon stop SINGING and start SWINGING.\u201d<\/p>\n
This follows President William Ruto\u2019s remarks about plans to eliminate the HELB loan and combine the three financial organizations for higher education.<\/p>\n

The MP had pleaded with President Ruto to reconsider his decision to axe Helb.<\/p>\n
University students, according to Owino, depended on financial support to study. He also noted that they needed an education to improve their future.<\/p>\n
\u201cHelb wachana nayo Kabisa, Ruto. (Never approach Helb.) Comrades are in poverty, and only education can keep them out of it \u201csaid he.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we live in a time of transition and difficulty, a decade of optimism and dread, and a time when both knowledge and ignorance are preent. The more we learn, the more our stupidity becomes apparent \u201cstated Owino.<\/p>\n
The National Skill and Funding Council, which combines the Helb, TVET, and University Funding Board, will be established, according to Ruto.<\/p>\n
He continued by saying that the action will close the up to 45% budget gap now present in higher education.<\/p>\n
According to Ruto, this strategy will increase the amount of financing for the HELB from Sh11 billion to Sh22 billion and even get rid of interest on the loan.<\/p>\n
