Graham Potter seemed to meet Chelsea’s needs for a project manager at the time. The 47-year-old was hired to oversee a rebuild of the team at Stamford Bridge after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital purchased the London club last year. He had enjoyed great success at Brighton. The project hasn’t started yet, though, so far.

Of course not in terms of transfer market activity. The team at Stamford Bridge has significantly changed from the one that concluded last season under Thomas Tuchel as a result of Chelsea spending more than £450 million over the last two transfer windows.

The Blues currently have one of the strongest Premier League teams based solely on talent.

However, Potter is having trouble on the field figuring out the correct recipe. While Chelsea displayed some impressive moments against West Ham on Saturday, their 1-1 Premier League draw at the London Stadium was their third straight tie. Chelsea has only won two of their last 12 games across all competitions, and they are now out of chances to save their campaign in any way.

What does Boehly think of Chelsea’s performances under Potter, especially those that have occurred since the World Cup break?

The American businessman is reputed to place a high ue on entertainment and is eager to see Chelsea develop into an offensive team, but the Blues aren’t doing much to amuse their supporters at the moment. Chelsea is currently a bad team to watch, in truth.

After three games without a goal against Liverpool and Fulham, Joao Felix’s opening goal against West Ham became Chelsea’s first in that span. Chelsea has scored the fewest goals this season—by a significant margin—of the traditional “Big Six,” scoring just 23 times in 22 league games.

If Potter hadn’t continued a pattern that dates all the way back to his time as manager of Brighton, this might not be such a big deal. Chelsea must ask themselves whether they will ever be a free-flowing offensive team under their present manager after Brighton was periodically criticized for their lack of bite in front of goal.

Despite a string of disappointing results and performances, Chelsea has consistently reaffirmed its confidence in Potter; nonetheless, the Blues must still make progress before the season is out. Without such development, Boehly and the Stanford Bridge decision-makers would be justified in questioning if their manager is a good fit for the team they have assembled.

Felix has adjusted well since joining on loan from Atletico Madrid in January, but despite occasional bursts of evident brilliance, Mykhailo Mudryk is still playing inside himself. While Mason Mount has recently lost prominence, Kai Havertz is currently the center of the Chelsea attack. However, the German lacks finesse in front of goal.

Romelu Lukaku, who is now on loan at Inter, is still still on Chelsea’s roster, and Christopher Nkunku is anticipated to arrive from RB Leipzig this summer.

It is unclear, nevertheless, whether these players will have any impact on Chelsea’s offensive strength. Potter has a poor history of using forwards to their full potential.

Potter was promoted as a manager with a vision for Chelsea’s future at the time of his appointment. But now it’s possible that Chelsea have assembled a team that he doesn’t know how to manage. The club as a whole is still evolving, not just the team that plays on the field, and Potter might fall foul of Stanford Bridge’s ongoing identity crisis.
