{"id":17774,"date":"2023-02-15T18:11:08","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T18:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/02\/15\/naira-scarcity-a-governor-that-once-stashed-20bn-old-notes-now-has-only-1bn-new-notes-akeregha\/"},"modified":"2023-02-15T18:11:08","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T18:11:08","slug":"naira-scarcity-a-governor-that-once-stashed-20bn-old-notes-now-has-only-1bn-new-notes-akeregha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/02\/15\/naira-scarcity-a-governor-that-once-stashed-20bn-old-notes-now-has-only-1bn-new-notes-akeregha\/","title":{"rendered":"Naira Scarcity: A Governor That Once Stashed 20bn Old Notes Now Has Only 1bn New Notes &#8211; Akeregha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Amid the ongoing hardship and uncertainties that have trailed the contentious new naira policy initiated by the Godwin Emefiele-led Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), veteran journalist, and political analyst, Igho Akeregha has come out to share his thoughts on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during an interview on Africa Independent Television\u2019s \u2018Kaakaki\u2019 program on Wednesday, Akeregha, who is a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, pointed out that though the currency scarcity occasioned by the CBN\u2019s naira redesign has been tough on Nigerians, there may, however, be some gains to the controversial policy as politicians and public office holders who intend to engage in vote-buying in the upcoming polls have suddenly had their financial capacity decimated overnight.<\/p>\n<p>According to the veteran journalist, a certain governor that stacked 20 billion naira in old notes is now forced to keep just 1 billion of the new notes which may not be enough to execute his intentions in the upcoming elections in his state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dfb633740fe14d1291367d99b9a0cf08\"\/><\/p>\n<p>He said; \u201cI should also put it on record this morning that the volume of cash that these politicians intend to store before this election, they no longer have it. This is because the CBN did not print enough of these redesigned notes. For example, a governor of a state that intended to execute election with 20 billion naira that he stashed in old notes, now has just 1 billion naira in new notes. So, that in itself has significantly reduced their capacity to influence the election in the way they would have liked.<\/p>\n<p>I am sure that Mr. President received security reports that there are politicians, particularly some candidates running for election, that have huge volumes of money. And then these individuals are so powerful that he cannot directly confront them. So what does he do? He comes up with this policy.
