Since the deregulation of the telecommunications sector by the administration of former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the sector has witnessed tremendous innovations with many attendant pros and cons.<\/p>\n

One undeniable evidence of this sectoral liberalisation, is the introduction of social media through the use of Global Systems for Mobile communication technology, (GSM)<\/p>\n

While many Nigerians would readily agree that from Kaura Namoda in Zamfara State to the quiet and serene village of Use Ndon in Akwa Ibom State, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have successfully created a virtual community of people with enhanced interaction.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

With this freedom to virtually relate with each other on social media platforms comes vile attacks, hate speeches, mud-slinging and fake news. Unfortunately, the paradox is unending.<\/p>\n

It is easy for government and stakeholders to propose legislations with a view to curbing these acts of cyberbullying.\u00a0However, communication experts are also proposing behavioural change, and respect for boundaries as critical factors capable of engineering responsible social media engagements.<\/p>\n

It is on the heels of this advocacy that the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, emphasised that people should be encouraged to fact-check every contentious issues found on the social media space.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

While speaking at the Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, Obio Akpa Campus, on the topic: Social Media and the Quest for Authentic Leadership, the Challenge of Government Information Management, the Commissioner posited that both social media and governance have assumed great inevitability in contemporary human existence.<\/p>\n

He argued that the implication of social media influence on government information management is such that the Information Manager\u2019s job is made difficult because of the immediacy of spread, hence the information manager needs to be on standby to manage attacks on government policies or his principal.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cThe situation puts the contemporary Information Manager in jeopardy of how to manage the information about government and his principal. He is at a loss as to where the next attack will come from. His gate-keeping capacity is stretched to the limits \u201c.<\/p>\n

While recommending that the contemporary Information Manager should expand his toolkit, especially in the area of public relations, where he must very early on, build goodwill for his employer, conscious that \u201cbad weather\u201d may surface along the line. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe media manager must refuse the undertaker role in governance, where he is called in when death has occurred. He must be invited or push to be invited into the decision-making process, where he can offer useful advice that can prevent a crisis from happening in the first instance \u201c.<\/p>\n

Ememobong also advanced that more stringent community rules should be engaged by the different social media platforms in order to point out different styles that people have used to bypass the existing laws, and modify different commands in a way that traps the offenders.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nse Essien, said the idea of the public lecture was apt, given the time and the mood of the country.<\/p>\n

He hailed the initiative, saying that the deliberations will add to the national discourse, especially in charting a new way to sanitise the country and make her great again.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, the Acting Head of the Department of Public Administration, AKSU, and organisers of the Public Lecture, Dr. Imo Ita, said the lecture was organised with the aim of transforming lives within and outside the school community. <\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cThe Department has taken this initiative, which we hope to sustain, and we will continue to take the initiative to bridge the gap, hence the quality of persons delivering this lecture today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Public Lecture, which had as its general theme: Democratic Governance In A Critical Environment, The Case of Nigeria, attracted professors, other members of the academia, as well as Dr. Godwin Ntuk Udeh, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Roads and Other Infrastructure Maintenance Agency (AKROIMA), who delivered a lecture on Sustainable Infrastructure and Educational Development in Akwa Ibom State.<\/p>\n
