{"id":134274,"date":"2023-12-22T17:46:39","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T17:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/22\/emefiele-kept-funds-in-593-us-uk-china-accounts-illegally-cbn-probes-panel-reveals\/"},"modified":"2023-12-22T17:46:39","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T17:46:39","slug":"emefiele-kept-funds-in-593-us-uk-china-accounts-illegally-cbn-probes-panel-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/22\/emefiele-kept-funds-in-593-us-uk-china-accounts-illegally-cbn-probes-panel-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"Emefiele Kept Funds In 593 US, UK, China Accounts Illegally \u2014 CBN Probes Panel Reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Godwin-Emefiele-2-700x375-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"375\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>A report by the special investigation panel on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and related entities, has revealed that Godwin Emefiele, the apex bank\u2019s ex-Governor, illegally kept billions of naira in 593 bank accounts in the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), and China.<\/p>\n<p>The Jim Obazee-led panel also disclosed that Emefiele lodged \u00a3543, 482,213 in fixed deposits in UK banks alone without the approval of the apex bank\u2019s board of directors and the investment committee.<\/p>\n<p>Submitted to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, the panel, in the report, tagged, \u2018Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable Offences), said all the accounts have been traced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe former governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele invested Nigeria\u2019s money without authorization in 593 foreign bank accounts in United States, China and United Kingdom, while he was in charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the accounts where the billions were lodged have all been traced by the investigator,\u201d the document disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: Abia Government Uncovers \u2018Japa\u2019 Doctors Still Collecting Salaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the report, billions of naira were allegedly stolen by Emefiele and other officials from the CBN\u2019s accounts including a \u201cfraudulent cash withdrawal of $6.23 million\u201d \u2014 about N2.9 billion at the then official exchange rate of N461 to a dollar.<\/p>\n<p>The panel also accused Emefiele of manipulating the exchange rate and perpetrateing fraud in the e-Naira project of the CBN.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele, who is currently in the Kuje correctional facility Centre, was arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on procurement fraud valued at N1.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>He has however not been able to meet the N300 million bail granted him by a high court of the Federal Capital Territory on November 22.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu, had on July 30, 2023, appointed Obazee, as a special investigator to probe the activities of the CBN and other related entities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div data-advadstrackid=\"890536\" data-advadstrackbid=\"1\" class=\"infor-target\" id=\"infor-836442570\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/300x250b.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A report by the special investigation panel on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and related entities, has revealed that Godwin Emefiele, the apex bank\u2019s ex-Governor, illegally kept billions of naira in 593 bank accounts in the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), and China.
