<\/div>\nThey say\u00a0breaking up is hard\u00a0to do, and we couldn\u2019t agree more. Everyone has at least one tragic, hilarious, and\/or awkward breakup story to tell. <\/p>\n
These oftentimes painful experiences are more universal than you might think. We\u2019ve broken down eight common splitting-up experiences. Maybe you\u2019ve experienced one\u2026or, oof, all eight of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Here are the 8 types of breakups we\u2019ve all experienced at least once:<\/p>\n
1. The text-message termination<\/h3>\n
If you\u2019ve dated in the 2000s, chances are this has happened to you (or you\u2019ve done it to someone else).<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s be honest; sometimes it\u2019s a relief \u2014 you might have been feeling the same way but were unable to bring yourself to have that awkward voice-to-voice conversation. Other times, it can feel like a punch in the gut. <\/p>\n
This one can also be called the, \u201cI don\u2019t really owe you anything\u201d breakup or the \u201cWe just were intimate\u00a0once, and I have no interest in doing it again\u201d severing of ties.\u00a0<\/p>\n
2. The ghost<\/h3>\n
Also known as\u00a0the disappearing act. Maybe the only thing worse than being dumped by text is not being properly dumped at all! Most people would rather hear a \u201cno\u201d than nothing. \u201cGhosting\u201d is the unofficial term for this maneuver.<\/p>\n
Cut your losses and move on, but whatever you do, no follow-up \u201cmaking sure you got this\u201d messages.\u00a0<\/p>\n
3. The quick goodbye<\/h3>\n
This is the polar opposite of the oldest trick in the book (leaving something so you have an excuse to see that person\u00a0again). This kind of breakup says, \u201cI\u2019m so over this, I\u2019m willing to never see that helmet I left in your trunk again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Or you finally\u00a0work up the courage to end things, and he reminds you that he still has that book you loaned him. Having no interest in bringing any more face time into this dead end, you tell him to consider it a parting gift. Then you immediately\u00a0block him on Facebook.<\/p>\n
4. The public\u00a0display of dissatisfaction<\/h3>\n
This is the worst. It\u2019s done on neutral ground so nobody feels comfortable having an emotional reaction. What are you going to do?\u00a0Have a meltdown\u00a0over your skinny latte at the local Starbucks? The good news is there is sugar at your immediate disposal to numb the\u00a0pain\u00a0right after your former lover bids you adieu.\u00a0<\/p>\n
5. The ill-timed ending<\/h3>\n
Would you rather they had waited until\u00a0after Christmas passed\u00a0and then maybe New Year\u2019s, okay, Valentine\u2019s Day? Because that could go on\u00a0forever.<\/p>\n
There is always some sort of special occasion looming, so\u00a0if you don\u2019t do it sooner or later, you\u2019ll find yourself justifying your inaction with crazy logic. \u201cWell, I can\u2019t break up with him now, Flag Day is next week, and his sister\u2019s anniversary is the week after that \u2014 what sort of monster am I?\u201d It\u2019s a rabbit hole no one wants to go down.\u00a0<\/p>\n
6. The BFF betrayal<\/h3>\n
Ouch. This one stings. It may sound like a plot for a generic romantic comedy, but it can happen in real life.<\/p>\n
How do you get through it? Depending on how deep into the relationship you were, you could be looking at the loss of a lover and a gal pal. Or maybe you felt like\u00a0he\u2019d be better for her all along! In that case, high five, matchmaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n
7. The slow fade<\/h3>\n
Come on, we\u2019ve all been guilty of the fade-out. One or both of you aren\u2019t feeling the chemistry, but no one wants to admit it. <\/p>\n
So you keep trudging it out until one day your conversation becomes, \u201cWhen are we hanging out again?\u201d \u201cSometime soon!\u201d and other vague promises until you both give up trying.<\/p>\n

8. The \u201cThings are just really crazy right now\u2026\u201d<\/h3>\n
This is an updated version of, \u201cIt\u2019s not you, it\u2019s me.\u201d Often doled out by someone too afraid to utter, \u201cI\u2019m just\u00a0not that into you,\u201d the I\u2019m-too-busy-for-a-relationship card is a favorite among the emotionally unavailable and the intimacy-phobic. We\u2019re usually all better off without this person, but it can still be hard to swallow at the time. \u00a0<\/p>\n
