{"id":131574,"date":"2023-12-15T13:36:11","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T13:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/15\/number-of-poor-households-in-nigeria-increased-by-24m-between-2018-and-2023-world-bank\/"},"modified":"2023-12-15T13:36:11","modified_gmt":"2023-12-15T13:36:11","slug":"number-of-poor-households-in-nigeria-increased-by-24m-between-2018-and-2023-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/15\/number-of-poor-households-in-nigeria-increased-by-24m-between-2018-and-2023-world-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Number of Poor Households In Nigeria Increased by 24m Between 2018 And 2023&#8217; \u2014 World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-884326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Poverty.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The World Bank has confirmed that Nigeria\u2019s poverty rate has increased to 46 percent in 2023, representing 104 million poor Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed in World Bank\u2019s Nigeria development update titled \u2018Turning the corner: From reforms &amp; renewed hope, to results.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>According to the Bank said, the rate rose from 40 percent in 2018 to 46 percent this year, as the number of poor people increased from 79 million to 104 million.<\/p>\n<p>The report added that more people have fallen below the poverty line due to sluggish growth and rising inflation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSluggish growth and rising inflation have increased poverty from 40 percent in 2018 to 46 percent in 2023, pushing an additional 24 million people below the national poverty line,\u201d World Bank stated.<\/p>\n<p>It furthered that the number of poor people in urban areas that are more exposed to inflation, increased from 13 million to 20 million, while the number of poor people in rural areas rose to 84 million from 67 million within the same period.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in poverty rate, it said, will be undone by the recent reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from 2024 onward, reversing the rise to 44 percent in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: Tinubu Borrows Over $1.95 Billion From World Bank In 4 Months \u2013 Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the medium term, the reforms will reverse this trend through higher growth and lower inflation, but to a limited extent, with poverty rates decreasing from 46 percent in 2024 to 44 percent in 2026,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n<p>World Bank said the reforms were essential for Nigeria to avoid a fiscal cliff and enable faster growth even though they brought difficult economic adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince May, retail gasoline prices have increased by an average of 163 percent and the Nigerian naira (N) has depreciated against the US dollar by 41 percent in the official market and by 30 percent in the parallel market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sharply higher price of gasoline and other imported goods has contributed to inflation, which increased from already elevated levels to 27.3 percent in October,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n<p>Information Nigeria understands that on Wednesday, Alex Sienaert, the bank\u2019s lead economist for Nigeria, said the country\u2019s petrol should be priced at N750 per litre in filling stations based on present official exchange rate, not N650.<\/p>\n<p>The reforms undertaken by Tinubu are ending petrol subsidy in May and devaluation of the naira by shifting to a unified, market-reflective foreign exchange rate in June.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div data-advadstrackid=\"890536\" data-advadstrackbid=\"1\" class=\"infor-target\" id=\"infor-183428422\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/300x250b.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank has confirmed that Nigeria\u2019s poverty rate has increased to 46 percent in 2023, representing 104 million poor Nigerians.
