{"id":131090,"date":"2023-12-14T12:36:59","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T12:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/14\/newcastle-absolutely-devastated-by-champions-league-exit\/"},"modified":"2023-12-14T12:36:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T12:36:59","slug":"newcastle-absolutely-devastated-by-champions-league-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/14\/newcastle-absolutely-devastated-by-champions-league-exit\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle absolutely devastated by Champions League exit \u2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Eddie Howe admitted Newcastle United were \u201cabsolutely devastated\u201d to have crashed out of the Champions League.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Magpies knew that a win over AC Milan at St James\u2019 Park might be enough to squeak through to the knockout stages, providing Paris Saint-Germain were unable to pick up an away win against Borussia Dortmund.<\/p>\n<p>PSG were unable to get the job done in Germany, drawing 1-1 after Kylian Mbappe saw a potential winner ruled out for offside, and that opened the door for Newcastle to qualify alongside Dortmund.<\/p>\n<p>Howe\u2019s injury-ravaged side were on course to get the job done after Joelinton\u2019s first half goal sent the home crowd wild, but former Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic levelled proceedings up on the hour before Samuel Chukwueze broke Toon hearts six minutes from time, earning Milan a\u00a0narrow 2-1 win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought there were some really good bits, we were dominant at times, but probably needed the second goal. We didn\u2019t defend the two goals well enough,\u201d Howe told\u00a0<em>TNT Sports<\/em>\u00a0after the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very much end to end. Both teams were desperate to win. It made for a very good game. We did create chances and we\u2019re absolutely devastated not to go through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle\u2019s late defeat saw Milan leapfrog them into third place in the group \u2013 Stefano Pioli\u2019s side will now compete in the Europa League knockout round play-offs in a bid to drop into the last 16 of that competition, while Howe\u2019s side are out of Europe completely.<\/p>\n<p>On what Newcastle have learned from the experience, Howe added: \u201cSo much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe value of the squad first and foremost, that\u2019s what\u2019s exposed us, the fact we haven\u2019t had the ability to utilise the squad we\u2019ve created.
