Manchester United limped out of the Champions League on Tuesday evening in a woeful 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a cagey and ultimately goalless first half in Manchester, Kingsley Coman\u2019s second-half strike was pretty much the only moment of quality in a drab encounter.<\/p>\n

Erik ten Hag\u2019s side needed a win to have any hope of survival but also relied on Copenhagen and Galatasaray sharing the spoils elsewhere, but victory for the Danish side meant there was nothing United could have done to survive.<\/p>\n

How the game unfolded<\/h3>\n

In the knowledge that only a win would do,\u00a0Man Utd\u00a0certainly upped the intensity from their dismal 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend. However, the hosts couldn\u2019t cause\u00a0Bayern\u00a0too many problems early on, the best they could muster in the opening half-hour being Luke Shaw\u2019s long-range effort that was comfortably dealt with by Manuel Neuer.<\/p>\n

The Bundesliga champions did give United some scares in the first-half, Leroy Sane\u2019s darting runs stretching their backline. The in-form winger should have done better with Coman\u2019s cross just after the 30-minute mark, inexplicably sending the ball backwards with his close-range volley.<\/p>\n

Whether incompetence or nerves, Man Utd failed to lay a glove on Bayern in a pretty dire first half of\u00a0Champions League\u00a0football, the visitors not needing to get out of second gear to contain Ten Hag\u2019s men.<\/p>\n

Bruno Fernandes produced a couple of wayward shots from the edge of the box early in the second half as Man Utd looked to step things up, while Joshua Kimmich also blazed over from 18 yards at the other end.<\/p>\n

In a lifeless affair, Bayern eventually produced a moment of quality that would send Man Utd out of the Champions League with 20 minutes to play. Harry Kane\u2019s deft flick in behind the hosts\u2019 backline sent Coman through on goal, and the Frenchman showed great composure to slam beyond a helpless Andre Onana.<\/p>\n

Man Utd were unable to produce any kind of response to Bayern\u2019s opener, Erik ten Hag\u2019s side exiting Europe in front of a subdued Old Trafford crowd. In the end, the damage had been done in their first five group stage games.<\/p>\n

GK: Andre Onana \u2013 6\/10 \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Had nothing to do but pick the ball out of his own net in the 71st minute.<\/p>\n

RB: Diogo Dalot \u2013 6\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0A much improved performance from the weekend, with some encouraging forward runs.<\/p>\n

CB: Harry Maguire \u2013 6\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Substituted just before half-time with a groin problem, only exacerbating Man Utd\u2019s injury woes. Performed well in his limited time on the pitch, but was rarely tested.<\/p>\n

CB: Raphael Varane \u2013 6\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Some important interventions early on and didn\u2019t do an awful lot wrong in the United backline. It was the players in front of him that struggled to make an impact.<\/p>\n

LB: Luke Shaw \u2013 6\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Not a comfortable evening for Shaw up against Coman, perhaps one of the reasons the left-back found himself injured at half-time. Substituted at the break.<\/p>\n

DM: Scott McTominay \u2013 5\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Couldn\u2019t make too many of his trademark runs into the final third and didn\u2019t cause Bayern\u2019s defence any issues.<\/p>\n

DM: Sofyan Amrabat \u2013 5\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Put himself about with ferocity, although did pick up a booking for a cynical foul on Jamal Musiala. The midfielder\u2019s lack of pace was often exposed.<\/p>\n

RM: Antony \u2013 5\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0One neat nutmeg on Kim Min-jae that will look great on a YouTube compilation, but he was ultimately invisible when United needed him to provide a moment of magic.<\/p>\n

AM: Bruno Fernandes \u2013 6\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Couldn\u2019t keep his cool with a couple of efforts from the edge of the penalty area and couldn\u2019t spark anything in Bayern\u2019s half. At least showed some determination out of possession.<\/p>\n

LM: Alejandro Garnacho \u2013 6\/10 \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Glimpses of his ingenuity down the left flank, but they didn\u2019t come with enough regularity. Lacked the quality required to hurt Bayern\u2019s backline.<\/p>\n

ST: Rasmus Hojlund \u2013 5\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Couldn\u2019t handle the aggressiveness of Bayern\u2019s two centre-backs and was bullied throughout.<\/p>\n

SUB: Jonny Evans (40\u2032 for Maguire) \u2013 6\/10<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Bayern didn\u2019t make Evans work too hard, but he couldn\u2019t keep a clean sheet in the end.<\/p>\n

RB: Noussair Mazraoui \u2013 6\/10 \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Substituted at half-time after a fairly ineffective performance, although he did make some useful forays forward despite not being picked out by teammates.<\/p>\n

CB: Dayot Upamecano \u2013 7\/10 \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Hojlund couldn\u2019t cope with his physicality, the Frenchman winning every battle.<\/p>\n

CB: Kim Min-jae \u2013 8\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0A wonderful performance from the South Korean international who showed Man Utd what they missed by not managing to capture his signature in the summer.<\/p>\n

LB: Alphonso Davies \u2013 7\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Plenty of opportunities to exhibit his frightening pace, dealing with Antony well. Should have been made to do more defensive work, to be honest.<\/p>\n

DM: Joshua Kimmich \u2013 7\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Almost caught in possession a couple of times after heavy touches, but helped keep things ticking in central areas.<\/p>\n

DM: Leon Goretzka \u2013 7\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0An unspectacular performance from Goretzka, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Did the basics well and helped Bayern control the tempo.<\/p>\n

RM: Kingsley Coman \u2013 8\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0A consistent threat on the right flank and took his goal beautifully. His speed made United defenders turn and face their own goal regularly.<\/p>\n

AM: Jamal Musiala \u2013 8\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0So graceful in possession, gliding across the Old Trafford turf throughout. In a tepid affair, he looked the most promising for Bayern before his withdrawal.<\/p>\n

LM: Leroy Sane \u2013 7\/10 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0His leggy runs caused Man Utd some issues, although he was guilty of wasting Bayern\u2019s most promising moments in the first half. Continued his good form, just lacking a little end product.<\/p>\n

ST: Harry Kane \u2013 7\/10 \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Bar a couple of tame shots, the England captain couldn\u2019t get too involved. Did produce a sublime assist for Coman\u2019s effort.<\/p>\n
