{"id":129633,"date":"2023-12-11T09:59:52","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T09:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/11\/compensate-victims-of-accidental-airstrikes-in-two-weeks-or-face-legal-action-femi-falana-to-fg\/"},"modified":"2023-12-11T09:59:52","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T09:59:52","slug":"compensate-victims-of-accidental-airstrikes-in-two-weeks-or-face-legal-action-femi-falana-to-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/12\/11\/compensate-victims-of-accidental-airstrikes-in-two-weeks-or-face-legal-action-femi-falana-to-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Compensate Victims Of Accidental Airstrikes In Two Weeks Or Face Legal Action \u2014 Femi Falana To FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-882210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Femi-Falana-1024x591-1.jpg\" alt=\"Femi Falana\" width=\"1024\" height=\"591\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum to compensate the victims of military airstrikes in the past seven years.<\/p>\n<p>Falana issued the warning in a Sunday statement, adding that the government will be sued before a Federal High Court if the demand is not met.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, over 300 civilians, including children and women, have died in accidental bombings initiated by the Nigerian military in the past few years.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, December 3 precisely, many residents of Tudun Biri in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna were killed in airstrikes said to be targeted at terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll from the miscalculated airstrike in Kaduna has now reportedly surpassed 120.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the incident, Falana, who is the chairman of Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), said there has been no justice for victims of these bombings across the years.<\/p>\n<p>The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said after the Rann bombing of January 2017, the Federal Government set up a commission \u201cmandated to review extant rules of engagement applicable in the armed forces of Nigeria as well as the extent of compliance with the rules. Part of the mandate of the commission was to also prefer means of preventing violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: \u2018Our Students Learnt Cybercrime From Leaders\u2019 \u2013 Peter Obi Laments As Nigeria Ranks 150 Among 180 Countries On Corruption<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He added that the government has neither published the report nor implemented the recommendations of the Commission headed by Justice Biobell Georgewill of the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo doubt, the military authorities accepted responsibility for the airstrikes and claimed that the crashes were caused by \u2018accidents\u2019. But no compensation was paid to those who were injured and the families of scores of people who lost their lives in the tragic incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission was given 90 days for the assessment. Our law firm represented the victims of the Rann airstrike at the Commission of Enquiry. Upon the conclusion of the assignment, the Commission submitted its report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal Government should pay adequate compensation to the victims of all airstrikes that have occurred in Nigeria in the past seven years.
