Information Minister\u00a0Kojo Oppong Nkrumah\u00a0has said the process used in approving the 2024 budget will have to apply in considering the Estimates, the Appropriation and the Revenue Bills.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was after he accused the\u00a0Minority\u00a0in\u00a0Parliament\u00a0of always wanting to play the numbers game given the composition of this parliament where both sides control 137-137 seats each and then one independent Member of Parliament.<\/p>\n

Whereas the Lawmakers on the government side play the balancing act, the Minority for the part attaches partisans interest to the issues in parliament such as the approval of government budgets, he added.<\/p>\n

Asked whether the concerns raised by the Minority in the 2024 budget statement are going to be addressed after the approval of the budget, Mr Oppong Nkrumah, also a lawmaker for Ofoase Ayirebi said on the\u00a0Ghana\u00a0Tonight\u00a0show on TV3 Thursday, December 7 that \u201cBy now there should be enough evidence that whenever concerns are raised and when considered as legitimate, the government does not shy to accommodate those concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven in the issue of the [Import Restriction] Legislative Instrument, there is enough evidence where there are concerns that are considered legitimate government is willing to do the needful to engage further or to do the necessary amendments.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill, I think it is also clear to everybody by now that our colleagues on the minority side because of the numbers in parliament sometimes choose to play the political game of pushing in it to the numbers. So we on the government side have walked a balancing act, are there legitimate interests in this particular matter that must be addressed and if they are, we address them? Still, where you are clear that there are no such interests, that it is purely partisan\u00a0politics\u00a0that is being played then you also have to ensure when the vote is called you have your numbers get to get to get that vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added \u201cfor the remaining three processes \u2013 the Estimates,\u00a0 the Appropriation Bill, and the Revenue Bills,\u00a0 we have to use the same text going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2024 budget statement was approved by Parliament on Thursday, December 7 after a headcount.<\/p>\n

At the end of the headcount, the\u00a0speaker\u00a0said that 138 members said \u2018ayes\u2019, and 136 said no<\/p>\n

Accordingly, the speaker the budget has been approved.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis house has accordingly approved the budget statement and economic policy of the government for the year ending 31st December 2024,\u201d the speaker said.<\/p>\n

Parliament could not approve the budget on Wednesday, November 29 after the\u00a0Majority\u00a0side of the House boycotted proceedings, making it the second time they are walking out on their own budget after they first did so on the\u00a02022 budget statement\u00a0which introduced the\u00a0e-levy.<\/p>\n

They disagreed with the way Mr Bagbin was conducting the business. They accused the Speaker of delaying proceedings in order for the\u00a0Minority\u00a0to have their full numbers in the House.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam George\u00a0is not here, Zanetor is not here, Mahama Ayariga, is not here so five of their members are not here. All the speaker is doing is to\u00a0delay\u00a0time for their members to come,\u201d\u00a0Majority Leader\u00a0Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu\u00a0told\u00a0journalists\u00a0after they walked out.<\/p>\n

The Speaker had to suspend sitting.<\/p>\n

Ningo-Prampram\u00a0Lawmaker Samuel Nartey George, however, rubbished the claim that he was not in Parliament.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Minority Leader\u00a0Dr\u00a0Cassiel Ato Forson\u00a0accused the\u00a0New Patriotic Party (NPP)\u00a0of lacking the numbers to approve the 2024\u00a0budget\u00a0statement.<\/p>\n

Addressing the press, Dr\u00a0Ato Forson\u00a0said \u201cThe NPP does not have the numbers to approve their own budget, sensing defeat they decided to walk out. The NDC\u00a0MPs\u00a0were ready to vote against the budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur position is that we can allow the budget to go through in its current form, because the ordinary Ghanaian will suffer.\u00a0John Kumah\u00a0is not here,\u00a0Kennedy Agyapong\u00a0is not here and sensing defeat they walked out, we will not stop, we will do what we have to do. The Budget has not been approved.\u201d<\/p>\n
