Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Isaac Adongo, has said that the\u00a0Minority\u00a0is resisting the approval of the\u00a02024 budget\u00a0because the document in its current form, will not benefit Ghanaians.<\/strong><\/p>\nHe said that they are against the numerous taxes that have been introduced in the budget.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re simply saying the budget, as they have presented, will not inure to the benefit of the people of\u00a0Ghana\u00a0and as a result, we\u2019re opposed to it. We disagree with the raft of tax measures that will impose hardship, is it difficult to ask for?\u201d He said on\u00a0Hot Issues<\/em>\u00a0with Keminni Amanor on TV3 Sunday, December 3.<\/p>\nThe\u00a0Speaker\u00a0of Parliament\u00a0Alban Bagbin\u00a0directed the business committee to reschedule the headcount for the approval of the 2024 budget to next week.<\/p>\n
A final decision will be taken on the budget during that session.<\/p>\n
In Parliament on Thursday, November 30, the\u00a0Speaker\u00a0indicated that the matter was not up for debate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have to debate this matter. It is a matter of record and I direct that the business committee should reschedule the issue for next week for us to finally take a decision on the budget.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe budget statement and economic policy of the government for the year 2024 is still before the House and so the business committee will reschedule it for next week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Parliament could not approve the budget on Wednesday, November 29 after the\u00a0Majority\u00a0side of the House boycotted proceedings, making it the second time they are walking out on their own budget after they first did so on the\u00a02022 budget statement\u00a0which introduced the\u00a0e-levy.<\/p>\n
They disagreed with the way Mr Bagbin was conducting the business. They accused the Speaker of delaying proceedings in order for the\u00a0Minority\u00a0to have their full numbers in the House.<\/p>\n
\u201cSam George is not here, Zanetor is not here,\u00a0Mahama Ayariga, is not here so five of their members are not here. All the speaker is doing is to\u00a0delay\u00a0time for their members to come,\u201d\u00a0Majority Leader\u00a0Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu\u00a0told\u00a0journalists\u00a0after they walked out.<\/p>\n
The Speaker had to suspend sitting.<\/p>\n
Ningo-Prampram Lawmaker Samuel Nartey George, however, rubbished the claim that he was not in Parliament.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Minority Leader\u00a0Dr Cassiel\u00a0Ato Forson\u00a0accused the\u00a0New Patriotic Party (NPP)\u00a0of lacking the numbers to approve the 2024\u00a0budget\u00a0statement.<\/p>\n
Addressing the press, Dr Ato Forson said \u201cThe NPP does not have the numbers to approve their own budget, sensing defeat they decided to walk out. The NDC\u00a0MPs\u00a0were ready to vote against the budget.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur position is that we can allow the budget to go through in its current form, because the ordinary Ghanaian will suffer.\u00a0John Kumah\u00a0is not here,\u00a0Kennedy Agyapong\u00a0is not here and sensing defeat they walked out, we will not stop, we will do what we have to do. The Budget has not been approved.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson\u00a0subsequently said the government is imposing 20% tax on \u201cakpeteshie\u201d, an indication that they have run out of ideas.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Dr Forson said petrol and diesel vehicle owners should also expect to pay a new annual tax of GHS100 per vehicle on all petrol and diesel cars (internal combustion engine vehicles).<\/p>\n
This tax will be imposed on all \u2018trotros\u2019, \u2018aboboyaas\u2019, \u2018okadas\u2019, taxis, commercial buses, trucks, ambulances, construction and heavy duty vehicles, water tankers, private cars, he said.<\/p>\n
He added, once your vehicle is powered by petrol or diesel, the government is imposing this tax on you.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to the government, this policy is aimed at promoting the use of cleaner\/more eco-friendly sources of energy (like electric vehicles). Companies will also pay GHS100 per tonne of carbon dioxide emission.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is according to a tax bill submitted by\u00a0President Akufo-Addo\u00a0and\u00a0Vice President\u00a0Bawumia.\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
