{"id":125193,"date":"2023-11-29T10:17:30","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T10:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/11\/29\/ghana-will-be-self-sufficient-in-food-production-in-next-5-years\/"},"modified":"2023-11-29T10:17:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T10:17:30","slug":"ghana-will-be-self-sufficient-in-food-production-in-next-5-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/11\/29\/ghana-will-be-self-sufficient-in-food-production-in-next-5-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana will be self-sufficient in food production in next 5 years \u2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Ache\u00adampong, has stated that Ghana will soon have the capacity to produce food on a larger scale in the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the official opening of the National Farmers\u2019 Day exhi\u00adbition dubbed \u201cAgrifest- 2023\u201d in Accra yesterday, Dr Bryan Ache\u00adampong said the government had set the five-year target to become self-sufficient in food production through the implementation of the Phase Two of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme.<\/p>\n<p>Over 150 exhibitors are show\u00adcasing their agri products at the five-day event being held at the Ministerial enclave in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>The PFJ phase Two, launched in October by the President, aims to increase agricultural productiv\u00adity, create jobs, and reduce food imports.<\/p>\n<p>The institution of National Farmers\u2019 Day is therefore recognis\u00ading agriculture as a major priority sector in the nation\u2019s development agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The event is the biggest statu\u00adtory obligation that provides the platform to celebrate Ghanaian farmers and fishers for their con\u00adtribution to the local and national economy.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Awards Night ceremony would be held at the University of Mines and Tech\u00adnology (UMaT), where President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will honour the best-performing farmers and fishers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood security requires a holistic approach and involves actions targeting enhancing access to high-quality inputs and mechanisa\u00adtion services, efficient and effective delivery of knowledge and adviso\u00adry services, and structured market arrangements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>These interventions he said, were also strategic and have proven to be the main drivers for improv\u00ading the productivity and incomes of food producers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to note that we need to increase investments in enhancing agricultural produc\u00adtive capacity through enhanced agricultural research and extension services, and technology devel\u00adopment. It also requires stronger partnerships with global, regional, and national development agen\u00adcies to capitalise on the synergies of the different programmes and interventions. These interven\u00adtions aim to substantially expand employment opportunities and achieve higher levels of economic productivity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Given the current state of agriculture in Ghana, he said, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture reviewed its strategy to implement the Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II (PFJ 2.0) to build on the successes of the initial\/first PFJ campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes a holistic view of the value chain approach by focusing on strengthening linkages among actors along selected agricultur\u00adal commodity value chains and improving service delivery to maximise impact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we celebrate this day, the good people of Ghana congratu\u00adlate all farmers and fishers.
