When a lot of people are experiencing the stress of the news of the world at once, it can make them more likely to \u201csnap at each other,\u201d Price says. We may not realize it, but the reason that guy was rude to you at Starbucks might be that he has read too many damn scary news articles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWhen you have multiple people who are struggling, they\u2019re going to have a harder time communicating together,\u201d says Bethany Teachman, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia. \u201cWe have to think of these things from a systemic perspective or we\u2019re not going to be very effective at making change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Teachman says doomscrolling can \u201cskew our sense of what\u2019s going on.\u201d You start to think everything and everyone is the worst, but it\u2019s quite possible little of it is actually affecting you personally. Perhaps terrible news from around the world would not be changing your daily life unless you were reading about it, and it\u2019s important to recognize when it\u2019s time to log off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe do need to stay informed, but when we move past informed to feeling overwhelmed and often paralyzed and feeling like we\u2019re under constant threat, it\u2019s clearly crossed over into a negative place,\u201d Teachman says. \u201cI think part of what\u2019s happening is most of the news stories tend to be negative, so it gives us this sense that we\u2019re in a constant state of danger and that we are vulnerable and the world is a very dangerous place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In terms of solutions, Teachman says people need to limit their exposure to social media and the news to keep their lives balanced. It\u2019s OK to read some news to stay informed and check out what people are saying online, but it can get unhealthy if you overdo it. Once you\u2019ve read enough to know what\u2019s going on, think of other things that you enjoy doing and that help you maintain your mental health, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about \u2018this is a bad thing and this is a good thing.\u2019 It\u2019s about how you engage with it and how it fits in with the rest of what\u2019s going on in your life,\u201d Teachman says. \u201cHow are you living the rest of your life, and what are the impacts on that?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re doomscrolling, we\u2019re kind of looking for the resolution to the issue.
