{"id":106636,"date":"2023-10-04T13:54:41","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T13:54:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/10\/04\/album-review-rocky-dawunis-grammy-nominated-voice-of-bunbon-vol-1\/"},"modified":"2023-10-04T13:54:41","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T13:54:41","slug":"album-review-rocky-dawunis-grammy-nominated-voice-of-bunbon-vol-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/10\/04\/album-review-rocky-dawunis-grammy-nominated-voice-of-bunbon-vol-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Album review: Rocky Dawuni\u2019s Grammy-nominated \u2018Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                        \n\n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocky Dawuni&#8217;s three Grammy Awards nominations have earned him more admiration by Ghanaians and other music lovers the world over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His \u2018Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1\u2019 album, which earned a nomination in the Best Global  Album category in the 64th Grammy Awards, got a lot of attention when most people were celebrating his feat two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ghanaian reggae artiste got nominated alongside albums by Wizkid, Daniel Ho &amp; Friends, Angelique Kidjo, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti &amp; Made Kuti for this album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes after Rocky\u2019s sixth studio album, \u2018Branches of The Same Tree\u2019, was nominated in the Grammys for Best Reggae Album in December 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, he was nominated again with the song &#8216;Neva Bow Down&#8217; featuring Blvk H3ro for the Best Global  Performance category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this piece, I take you through the 8-track album which Rocky describes as an EP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u2018Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1\u2019 mirrors Rocky\u2019s \u2018Afro Roots\u2019 style of music, a potpourri of reggae, Afrobeat, highlife, and soul music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named after his hometown Bunbon in the Yendi District of Ghana, the album was released on October 30, 2020; a time when coronavirus was ravaging the world and nations looked helpless on what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From his haven up the Aburi mountains in the Eastern Region of Ghana, he birthed this album which comprises eight songs: \u2018Difference,\u2019 \u2018My Baby,\u2019 \u2018Woara,\u2019 \u2018Ghost Town,\u2019 \u2018Gonna Take it Easy,\u2019 \u2018Beautiful People,\u2019 \u2018Born to Win,\u2019 and \u2018Hustlers\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Rocky1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032387853\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Rocky Dawuni, his entire musical journey has always been influenced by the culture of Bunbon, shaping his worldview about music and life in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Difference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocky Dawuni makes a \u2018Difference\u2019 with Afrobeat elements tinged with drops of dancehall kicks on track 1. In the song, Rocky Dawuni talks about how important it is to stand up and get going if one really wants to make a difference in their endeavors. \u201cWe have to take a chance if we\u2019re gonna ride the tide,\u201d he sings. Making a difference in whatever one is engaged in, does not happen by fluke. There should always be the desire to go an extra mile to move from ordinary to extraordinary \u2013 and that is the crux of Rocky\u2019s message in the opening track of the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"fF07F4_UtPA\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rocky Dawuni &quot;Difference&quot;\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fF07F4_UtPA?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My Baby<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is anything that really leads Rocky Dawuni to his roots, it is his love for highlife and his unwavering quest to make it part of his repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018My Baby\u2019, done in Key C Major, is a piece of Ghanaian highlife music, that talks about love. It tells the story of a man deeply in love with a lady, testing her love on many conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sung in Ghanaian Pidgin English, the song makes use of an archetypal Ghanaian palm wine highlife instrumentation, with the traditional bass drum laying a bed for the string instruments to echo the true DNA of the song \u2013 highlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Woara<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Woara\u2019 is another love song, done in highlife fashion. This is a song in which the singer professes his undying love for his loved one. It has a relatable chorus and a familiar chordal progression for any highlife lover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ghost Town<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocky gets quite mellow on drumming home a message that needs more attention than just moving the body \u2013 coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Done on acoustic guitar instrumentation, \u2018Ghost Town\u2019 accentuates the untold misery coronavirus and the global lockdown brought to humankind. He describes the world as a ghost town because the disease emptied the streets, and brought fear and despair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the fact that most people in Ghana left the cities to their villages reveals the importance of our African cultural traditions being that which knits us together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"WIGe4-YjWWQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rocky Dawuni &quot;Ghost Town&quot;\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WIGe4-YjWWQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gonna Take it Easy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After working hard during the week, Rocky believes one needs to take life easy and cool off. \u2018Gonna Take it Easy\u2019, a typical one-drop reggae tune mentions how important it is to rest and have fun after working all day, all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beautiful People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To most people who have followed Rocky Dawuni since the inception of his music career, a song like \u2018Beautiful People\u2019, another reggae delivery, is reminiscent of what his reggae brand stands for. In \u2018Beautiful People\u2019, Rocky Dawuni preaches love, calls on all, and sundry to come to have a bite of his gift of love \u2013 music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Born to win<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who feel betrayed by life and are thinking of giving up in pursuit of their goals, Rocky encourages them to keep on fighting. \u2018Born to Win\u2019, which leans more towards soul music, simply encourages one to take charge of their lives. It goes ahead to admonish the listener to start something now because whichever way one\u2019s life turns, is up to them. Rocky summarises what any of our motivational speakers, pastors, and self-styled counselors will on a normal day present to people who are chasing their dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hustlers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Hustlers\u2019, the last song on the album, dovetails into the theme of \u2018Born to win\u2019.
