Daniel Radcliffe said the \u201cbrilliant, effortless\u201d actor \u201cloved his job but never seemed defined by it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Emma Watson thanked Sir Michael for \u201cshowing us what it looks like to wear greatness lightly\u201d.<\/p>\n

Writer JK Rowling hailed a \u201cwonderful man\u201d and \u201coutstanding actor\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another Potter star, Fiona Shaw, said Sir Michael has shown during his long and varied life that he \u201ccould do anything\u201d as an actor.<\/p>\n

The Dublin-born actor, who died in hospital after a bout of pneumonia, worked in TV, film, theatre and radio in his six-decade career. He won four Baftas.<\/p>\n

Sir Michael\u2019s family had moved to London when he was a child but he made his very first stage performance in Ireland, in a production of Othello in Dublin in 1962.<\/p>\n

His career took off when he became one of the original members of Laurence Olivier\u2019s National Theatre acting company in London. He went on to win three Olivier awards for performances in National Theatre productions.<\/p>\n

Although he always regarded his theatre work as the most important, he won acclaim for a series of key TV and cinema roles in the 1980s and 1990s.<\/p>\n

These included the ground-breaking and controversial BBC One drama The Singing Detective, in which he played the eponymous sleuth in a complex tale from writer Dennis Potter.<\/p>\n

He played a very different detective, Parisian Jules Maigret, in two series of an ITV adaptation of Georges Simenon\u2019s classic novels, and portrayed Oscar Wilde in 1985 in a three-part BBC Two series focused on the writer\u2019s criminal trial and imprisonment.<\/p>\n

One of his most memorable cinematic outings was as the gluttonous and irredeemable \u201cthief\u201d in 1989\u2019s The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover,<\/p>\n

Dame Helen Mirren \u2013 who played his adulterous wife, said he was a \u201cnaughty but very, very funny\u201d friend.<\/p>\n

In an interview for this weekend\u2019s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Dame Helen recalled how he had kept her \u201cconstantly in laughter\u201d during filming and also when they appeared on stage in Antony and Cleopatra seven years previously.<\/p>\n

She added that in recent times the two had discussed growing older, and how that affected their work:<\/p>\n

Sir Michael was \u201cutterly realistic\u201d about his situation, she said. \u201cHe found it increasingly difficult to remember lines, which I have the greatest of sympathy with, and that sort of took him away from theatre,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Other notable film roles in the following decade saw him playing opposite some of Hollywood\u2019s biggest names, in big-screen hits such as Toys, Sleepy Hollow, Gosford Park. There was even time for a comedic cameo as the prime minister in Ali G Indahouse.<\/p>\n

\u2018Magnificent trickster\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n

But when a fellow acting titan, Richard Harris, died in 2002, Sir Michael accepted the challenge of succeeding him in the role of Dumbledore \u2013 headmaster of wizarding school Hogwarts \u2013 in the hit Harry Potter series.<\/p>\n

In her tribute on X, formerly Twitter, JK Rowling \u2013 the creator of the books \u2013 said: \u201cThe first time I ever laid eyes on him was in King Lear, in 1982, and if you\u2019d told me then that brilliant actor would appear in anything I\u2019d written, I\u2019d have thought you were insane.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael was a wonderful man in additional to being an outstanding actor, and I absolutely loved working with him, not only on Potter but also The Casual Vacancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe ended up working with Sir Michael throughout his teenage years and he issued a statement that said: \u201cMichael Gambon was one of the most brilliant, effortless actors I\u2019ve ever had the privilege of working with,but, despite his immense talent, the thing I will remember most about him is how much fun he had doing his job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recalling Sir Michael\u2019s habit of \u201cblurring the lines of fact and fiction\u201d when speaking to journalists at press event, Radcliffe added: He was silly, irreverent and hilarious. He loved his job, but never seemed defined by it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma Watson, who played Hermione Grainger, said in a post on Instagram: \u201cYou never took it too seriously but somehow delivered the most serious moments with all the gravitas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rupert Grint said his \u201cpersonal role model\u201d had \u201cbrought so much warmth and mischief to every day on set\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the series, wrote on social media: \u201cI learned what acting could be from Michael in The Singing Detective \u2013 complex, vulnerable and utterly human.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe greatest thrill of being in the Potter films was that he knew my name and shared his fearless, filthy sense of fun with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fiona Shaw, who played Petunia Dursley in the films, told BBC Radio 4\u2019s The World at One: \u201cHe varied his career remarkably and never judged what he was doing, he just played.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she would always think of him \u201cas a trickster, just a brilliant, magnificent trickster\u201d, adding: \u201cWith text, there was nothing like him. He could do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

And James Phelps, who played Fred Weasley in the films, called Sir Michael \u201ca legend\u201d in a tribute on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n

He also recalled that Sir Michael once offered to go over lines one weekend when he had a part in Peter and the Wolf with the Manchester Halle Orchestra.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spent what should have been his downtime going over my weekend gig. It is a memory that I\u2019ve always had as one of the highlights of my (Harry Potter) days,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dame Joan Collins, who played Sir Michael\u2019s wife in BBC sitcom Mama\u2019s Back in 1993, called him a \u201cgreat actor and great fun\u201d.<\/p>\n

Dame Eileen Atkins, a longstanding friend of Sir Michael, told BBC Radio 4\u2019s The World at One he was \u201ca great actor, but he always pretended he didn\u2019t take it very seriously\u201d and that he had amazing stage presence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just had to walk on stage and he commanded the whole audience immediately,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was something very sweet about him, this huge man who could look very frightening \u2013 but there was something incredibly sweet inside Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cI will always remember that man.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018The Great Gambon\u2019<\/h2>\n

His other film work that he juggled alongside the Potter movies in later years included the big screen adaptation of Dad\u2019s Army and the King\u2019s Speech, in which he portrayed King George V, father of the stammering King George VI.<\/p>\n

He was nominated for Emmy awards for his role as Mr Woodhouse in an adaptation of Jane Austen\u2019s Emma in 2010, and for playing President Lyndon B Johnson in Path to War in 2002. He also got a Tony nomination in 1997 for a role in David Hare play Skylight.<\/p>\n

He was knighted for services to the entertainment industry in 1998. Although Irish-born, he had become a British citizen in his childhood.<\/p>\n

The actor, known as \u201cThe Great Gambon\u201d in acting circles, had last appeared on stage in 2012 in a London production of Samuel Beckett\u2019s play All That Fall.<\/p>\n

American actor Ryan Phillippe said he felt \u201cso lucky\u201d to work with Sir Michael on Gosford Park. He recalled that Sir Michael was in his 60s at the time and he was only 25, but they \u201cgot along like schoolmates due to his irrepressibly youthful spirit\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe car rides home from work, in his vintage convertible, at breakneck speed, with the Stones full volume on the radio, will stay with me forever.. Rest in peace, mate,\u201d he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar paid tribute, saying: \u201cA great actor. Whether performing in Beckett, Dennis Potter or Harry Potter, he gave his all to every performance.\u201d<\/p>\n
