SANGOMA: I’m tired of living next to water

Madala Matondzi Ramokundo, a 63-year-old sangoma from Hebron near Midas in Mabopane, Tshwane, is in need of assistance. He has been living in a deteriorated one-room shack since February 2023. Madala explained that he rented a stand from an unknown man who demanded R500 in monthly payments. Homeless and desperate, he felt compelled to take the offer.

Madala’s struggles began in 2014 when he returned from his ukuthwasa (initiation as a sangoma). Upon his return, he discovered that his previously owned stand had been stolen, with a house built on it. He has since been moving from one place to another.

The situation worsened when he moved to the stand he rented in February, where he now lives near a stream in the bush, facing potential danger from the water.

Madala emphasized that his ancestors want him to continue practicing as a sangoma, but his current living conditions make it impossible.

He’s reaching out to SunReaders for help in finding a suitable place to live where he can practice his calling. Madala expressed his willingness to use his pension money to save and build himself a home.

Julia Molwantwa, Madala’s neighbor, expressed shock at the conditions he’s living in and decided to help him by taking his Sassa card and purchasing groceries to ensure he doesn’t pay the unknown man who rented him the stand, believing he is being scammed.
