A random school search at a primary school in the Vosman policing area has revealed that learners are attending school heavily armed with dangerous weapons, some of which were self-made.
The search was conducted by police and educators after they received information that learners at the school were involved in violent crimes, bullying and gang activity.
During the search, police found a variety of weapons, knives, scissors, screwdrivers, and even a firearm. They also found drugs and other contraband.
The School Governing Body (SGB) and educators are shocked by the findings of the search. They say that they had no idea that learners were bringing weapons and drugs to school.
The Acting Station Commander of Vosman SAPS, Brigadier Gayane Mashego, says that parents are the first line of school safety and that responsibility should not be delegated to teachers and police only.
“We often get information about lower grade learners disrespecting their teachers or getting involved in deadly confrontation among themselves but now, we have an understanding that they do this because the parents simply do not involve themselves in the school wellbeing of their own children, ” said Brigadier Mashego.
Police have arranged an urgent meeting with parents and the SGB of the particular primary school to discuss the matter and to develop strategies to improve school safety.
The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 9th.
In the meantime, police are urging parents to be more involved in their children’s lives and to talk to them about the dangers of violence, drugs, and weapons.
They are also urging anyone with information about the crimes that are being committed at the school to come forward and report it to the police.
This is a serious situation that needs to be addressed immediately. The safety of our children is at stake.
