Elderly citizens having a time of their lives in fitness class

Elderly citizens Are having a time of their lives at a fitness programme which is being held by the Roselane Congregational Church in Kariega.

The week, which is celebrated from September 4 to 10, sees physiotherapists volunteer their time to promote healthy living and educate the public.

In Kariega, the group of 30odd senior citizens got a chance to experience and learn exercises they could do in the comfort of their bedrooms.

“Because we have become more sedentary, it affects your organs and leads to bone, joint and other problems if you sit too much,” Dimitriou said.

“Unfortunately, today we don’t have to go anywhere. We do everything online and it becomes a problem.”

She said movement was especially important for the elderly because a lack of it could result in their bodies degenerating faster.

Alice Butler, 73, said she was glad they could be part of the programme and receive advice from an expert.

Dimitriou was assisted by SASP Eastern Cape branch administrator Marion Dawson and two physiotherapists who are doing their community service year at Provincial Hospital in Kariega.
