[Opinion] Broos’ exclusion of Chiefs players at Bafana is a cheap way of scoring points

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos created a huge debate in the country with his latest squad announcement after he did not include any players from Kaizer Chiefs.

The absence of Chiefs players in the Bafana squad is due to the club not doing well from last season when Arthur Zwane was in charge.

The Glamour Boys had a bad start under new head coach Molefi Ntseki and only started coming to life in the recent two matches, where they thrashed AmaZulu 3-0 and beat Stellenbosch 2-0.

Broos has created an impression that Amakhosi does not have quality players. However, despite the club not doing well in recent years, they still managed to sell a couple of players to overseas teams.

Of the big three teams, Chiefs have sent the most players overseas from last season, as they sold Njabulo Blom in December last year to Major League Soccer side St. Louis City and in the off-season concluded a deal for Siyabonga Ngezana to join Romanian side FCSB.

The selection of players in the national team should not depend on how the team is doing and Broos’ exclusion of Amakhosi players also shows lack of consistency from his side.

The Belgian coach has previously selected players from the so-called small teams like Yusuf Maart when he was at Sekhukhune United but after he joined Chiefs, he stopped selecting him for Bafana Bafana.

selection of players at the national team is based on how a particular club is doing, does that mean if a South African striker of a team at the bottom of the log, for example, becomes the top goal-scorer, should he be overlooked because his team is not doing well?

If that is the case, all Mamelodi Sundowns players who are South Africans may as well be all transferred directly into the national team.

It’s not true that none of Chiefs players deserve to be in the national team, it’s just that Broos is trying to prove a point that Amakhosi may be the most supported team but that does not guarantee their players selection at Bafana.
