Orlando Pirates head coach, Jose Riveiro, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and victory against Cape Town City in a recent DStv Premiership clash on Tuesday 29 August 2023 at Orlando Stadium.
The Spanish coach highlighted the significance of the win for the club, following a less-than-ideal showing in their previous league fixture.
The Buccaneers had faced a disappointing 1-1 draw against Chippa United in their previous league encounter, prompting them to take a break from the domestic campaign and focus on the CAF Champions League.
During their time in the continental tournament, they secured a place in the second round of the preliminary stages by convincingly defeating Djabal FC from the Comoros with a 4-0 aggregate score.
In their match against Cape Town City, Orlando Pirates got off to a strong start. Zakhele Lepasa netted a goal within the opening 10 minutes, giving the team an early lead. Patrick Maswanganyi extended the lead further in the second half.
Speaking about the victory, Coach Riveiro expressed his comfort with the result, emphasizing the importance of securing three points after a period of focusing on the continental competition.
He stated, “We really wanted those three points, it’s been a long time since we competed for three points in the league after our time in the Caf competition.”
Riveiro highlighted the team’s ability to adapt to Cape Town City’s higher pressing tactics, which had been employed against them. He praised his players for effectively countering these tactics and creating more advantages for themselves in both halves of the game.
The coach also commended the contributions of the substitutes, noting their positive impact on the match’s outcome. He explained that while the team faced initial challenges, the introduction of fresh players from the bench played a significant role in gaining control during the later stages of the game.
The win showcased the team’s resilience and determination, which bodes well for their upcoming fixtures in both the domestic league and the CAF Champions League.
As the Buccaneers continue to strive for success on multiple fronts, the guidance and leadership of Coach Riveiro will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping their future performances.
