He revealed that the practice of punishing students for speaking Igbo is still ongoing in some schools. He pointed out that in certain regions of the East, where Igbo children are learning, they are discouraged from speaking their native language by being subjected to physical punishment or laborious tasks like clearing grass.
Ugezu J Ugezu refrained from mentioning specific school names but emphasized that the issue is alarming. He stressed that anyone involved in such actions, whether it’s the principal, teacher, or prefect, is contributing to the endangerment of the Igbo language. He questioned whether the Igbo people are aware of this practice and urged the education authorities to take note of the situation, as the language is at risk of becoming extinct.
He also highlighted the comparison to other countries like Germany and China, where speaking their respective languages in schools is not met with punitive measures. He questioned the logic behind such actions and highlighted the importance of preserving the Igbo language.
