New chancellor at WSU calls for re-look at education

Nonkululeko Gobodo has called for reforms on the education sector.

She was joined in her call by KPMG board chair Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu, who argued for a skills-based curriculum in high schools.

Both were speaking during Gobodo’s inauguration as WSU’S new chancellor at the university’s Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha on Saturday.

In 1976, Nkuhlu became the first black African to qualify as a chartered accountant in SA while Gobodo became the country’s first black woman chartered accountant in 1987.

In her maiden speech as the chancellor on Saturday, she said: “Education is the only lever we have to transform SA. But we are also seeing a sad trend of graduates sitting at home for years and not finding jobs.

“And for me this does not make sense, that graduates sit at home with those who have no education.

“That says to me there is something wrong with our education system if graduates cannot come up with ideas like how to start a business or do something with their lives. We need to look into this.”

She also pledged to support the efforts of WSU vice-chancellor and principal Prof Rushiella Songca, whom she praised for having a brilliant strategy for the university.

“We have a situation in SA where women leaders are facing a lot of challenges.

“They work in environments that are hostile to them but they are expected to succeed.

“At every turn, women deserve to be given space to lead like everyone else.

“And I am not suggesting that we tolerate poor leadership from anyone, whether it be a man or woman, as the cost of poor leadership is too high.

“But there is definitely unfair treatment of female leaders,” Gobodo said.

She said Songca had a big vision for WSU that she should be allowed to implement.

One of her roles as the new chancellor would be to offer Songca her unwavering support. She hoped to inspire thousands of students, mostly from poor homes, to pursue their dreams.
