Gov. Ortom Reacts As Benue State Universities Plan To Go On Strike

In particular, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Benue State University chapter has been urged by Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom to postpone its planned strike.

The Governor, who spoke on Sunday during a Thanksgiving Mass held in his honor at the BSU Good Shepherd Catholic Chaplaincy in Makurdi, urged the unions to always look for other means of settling disputes with the administration of the university and the state government.

Ortom restated the administration’s commitment to keeping the University in first-line responsibility and emphasized that “the education of the Benue child must not be regarded with lightness.”

The Governor said that he had received adequate information regarding any unresolved disputes between the University’s industrial unions and the State Government will continue to demonstrate its serious commitment to finding solutions that will support the institution’s expansion.

The Governor urged finding a middle ground in disagreements and resisting the urge to go on strike constantly.

“I am delighted you have been able to administer the University without any serious complications,” he said, praising the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tor Iorapuu, and the administration of the university.
