Alaba Akintola a student of Middle Tennessee State University, United States, participated in the 60m and 200m events. He ran at a time of 6.59seconds at the Commodore Challenge to break the record in 60m.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist started on a bright note for the season.
The 6.59 seconds in the 60m final is also the fastest time in Nigerian history, beating his previous record of 6.67seconds in the 60m and is also a Top five time on the 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association top list in the event.
Akintola who is from Ondo State, his new record is a Top 5 time in the nation and first in C-USA, replaces a 20-year-old record set by Mardy Scales, a National Collegiate Athletic Association champion.
Following his feat, Akintola was named as the Conference USA (C-USA) Athlete of the week.
Last season, the 21-year-old with silver medal at the African Youth Games ran a time of 20.44seconds at the men’s 200m semi-finals at the NCAA OTF Outdoor Championship and made it to the 100m semi-finals at the event in 10.25seconds.
He hopes to smash more records at Vanderbilt Invitational Championship in Nashville, Tennessee between 20th and 21St January, 2023.
