ASUU Crisis: CONUA, NAMDA illegal groups in varsity system; can’t be accorded recognition — ASUU

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical Doctors in Academics (NAMDA) have once again been rejected by the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who claimed that they were irrelevant and had no impact on the Nigerian university system.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, presented certificates of recognition to CONUA and NAMDA. He claimed that, “this was the government’s attempt to silence ASUU, but vowed that it would fail.”

He believed that, “the two newly registered university academic unions were unlawful and, as such, should not be given any recognition by anyone under any circumstances.”

Osodeke, who claimed ASUU was unaware of the development, told Vanguard that, “the two unions were illegal and had no business operating in the country’s university system in response to the minister’s Tuesday presentation of certificates to the unions allowing them to operate under the country’s Trade Dispute Act and the Trade Union Act.”

“He questioned why, in contrast to when academic unions were formed a few years ago, the federal government made the handing of certificates to newly registered unions a public event.”

“Well, we don’t know if operating certificates exist or are presented to criminal organisations, either. Since they would not have done that if they had nothing to hide, the federal government must have something to hide.”
