Another round of trouble might be witnessed in Nairobi on Monday after the Azimio La Umoja coalition revealed where it’s demonstrations and protests will be focused on.
Last Monday, there were running battles between Azimio supporters and police after attempts by the protesters to access the city center, with Azimio boss Raila Odinga also being blocked from accessing the Central Business District (CBD) to meet supporters.
But Azimio has announced that its next week demos will also be targetting the same area, the CBD, in what could result in another faceoff with the police.
In a letter presented to Nairobi Police Boss Adamson Bungei yesterday, the coalition added that the protests will take part in all the major streets in the city center, but pointed out that they will be peaceful.
This might result in another attempt to block the protesters from accessing the CBD to prevent destruction of property and disruption of businesses, which normally results in chaos.
The government has maintained that businesses must proceed as should be the case on the Mondays and Thursdays Azimio is planning demos, as was declared by President William Ruto yesterday.
Ruto assured business owners and investors that their operations will not be disrupted, even as preachers and politicians try to broker a truce between him and Raila to end the stalemate.
While Ruto has remained defiant, maintaining that he will not reward impunity and anarchy, Raila says that the only way he will stand down is if his demands are met, which include lowering of cost of living.
