Due to the high cost of fuel, it is good to learn a few tricks that will help ease the pain at the pump and reduce the number of visits to fuelling stations.
A number of people normally wonder why their cars consumer more fuel than the expected average of that given car model. Well, in order to reduce the fuel consumption, you need to do the following:
1. Be gentle on the accelerator pedal
Whenever driving, ensure you press the accelerator gently. Avoid hard accelerations at all cost if you want to use less fuel. Basically, let the car pick speed on its own rather than forcing it through pressing the accelerator hard. For your information, hard acceleration can increase fuel consumption two fold especially if the route you are using has bumps or potholes that forces you to slow down often. Besides, hard acceleration reduces engine lifespan. Apart from when overtaking another vehicle, always ensure that you step on the accelerator gently to cut down on fuel expenditure.
2. Maintain low speeds and RPM
It is advisable to maintain speeds of between 80 to 100 kilometres per hour if saving fuel is part of your wish list. Keep in mind that the faster you go the more fuel you use. Besides, it is good keep the engine revving at under 2500 rotations per minute (RPM). Check your tachometer (a gauge on the dashboard written RPM × 1000) from time to time; whenever the reading goes close to ‘3’, ease the stepping on the accelerator.
Unfortunately, some cars don’t have a tachometer. In this case only a car enthusiastic has the ability to determine whether the revs are below 2500 RPM by listening to the engine sound.
4. Switch on eco mode
Most automatic cars have eco mode setting which helps to keep engine RPM low thus saving fuel.
3. Avoid hilly landscapes whenever possible
Driving up steep inclines increases fuel consumption since the car runs on low gears and high RPM. Therefore, if you can find an alternative route even if slightly longer than the usual hilly terrain then go for it. In addition, avoid driving uphill so fast since apart from high fuel consumption it may also cause the engine to overheat especially if it a small engine (less than 1300cc). Therefore, if you know of a shortcut that runs through a hilly terrain, avoid it since you may end up using more fuel. It will only be economical on the return journey when you are going downhill.
4. Take your car for check-up
At times, high fuel consumption may be caused by more than just driving habits but also underlying mechanical condition of the vehicle. If you notice that the vehicle is consuming more fuel than it used to despite applying the tricks outlined above then it’s time you visit a mechanic for an engine diagnosis.
