ICT CS Eliud Owalo has revealed that Kenyan government will start manufacturing affordable phones by August. Owalo said the aim of manufacturing cheap phones is to reduce the cost of importing expensive phones.Owalo said that agenda of manufacturing cheap phones will be launched around July, and most probably will start in August and this show that in the next future Kenya will be also ahead in technology and they will export their phones to other countries.
“Kenya must become manufacturer of phones a d cheap-enabled technology as opposed to a net importer. This will be launched around July, worst case scenario August. In the not so-distant. future, Kenya will be a net exporter of technology.” CS Owalo said.
This comes some months after President Ruto said that Kenya will start to manufacture smartphones worth less than Ksh.5K in the year 2023. He said making the country fully connected through technology is among the primary agendas of the Kenya Kwanza government

Kenya Kwanza government have already delivered some of it promises such as free internet after CS Owalo launched free WiFi in Nairobi, Siaya and some parts of the country.
“The real last mile in technology is the gadget and already we are working with Telcos so that we can have a smartphone that is going to be less than Ksh.5,000 and that can do everything you want,” said President Ruto.
