Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga now claims that the handshakes that have been happening in the country are on most occassions organized from outside and only implemented in Kenya.
Handshakes and political truces are becoming common in the country, the most popular one being the one between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on March 9, 2018.
But Mutunga notes that contrary to the excuse that they are being done for the sake of peace and stability, at times money has been switching hands.
He says that a number of other reasons also normally bring the leaders from the government and opposition sides together, like opposition politicians trying to be in the government’s good books.
“Such handshakes have been about the occupation of political space solely by the ruling classes and their coalitions; the exchanges of huge sums of money, ensuring the Godfather in power protects all interests of the ruling elites while receiving “gifts” from all and ensuring no alternative political opposition takes root in this country since the banning of Kenya People’s Union in 1969,” he writes in The Star.
“Political handshakes in Kenya have always reflected diverse interests, but fundamentally anchored in the interests of the ruling elites and those of their foreign masters,” Mutunga further writes.
He says that as a result, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should stop dismissing the possibilities of another handshake between President William Ruto and Raila, noting that it might actually come.
Gachagua has repeatedly warned Ruto against taking that route, cautioning that his Mt Kenya backyard won’t allow it.
