According to report, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to stage a large-scale demonstration in response to what it has dubbed an exorbitant increase in university tuition for both new and returning students.
This was said at a media briefing on Friday in Maiduguri, Borno State, by Comrade Suleiman Sarki, the Association’s National Vice President.
According to source, students from the North-East, who have been severely impacted by 13 years of insurgency, will be particularly negatively impacted by the raise, according to Comrade Sarki.
According to him, NANS had given the administration of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) a week to change its mind or face widespread unrest.
Comrade Sarki reported that the University of Maiduguri has doubled its registration cost out of fear, that a large number of students could abandon their studies as a result of the unreasonable price.
According to source, the NANS Vice President asked students not to pay the new registration fees instead of waiting for the results of the NANS strategic action plan, as the Association had already started consulting with the administration of the University of Maiduguri.
In order to convince the governing councils of Federal Universities to reverse their decision, he urged stakeholders in the education sector across the nation to take action.
Following the rising cost of instructional materials, the UNIMAID Governing Council recommended a reassessment of the undergraduate and graduate registration fees on December 1, 2022.
