How I Graduated With First Class At Age of 41 After Dropping Out of School in 2001 — 41-year-old Man

A 41-year-old man, Nwankwo Anyamaobi, who graduated with a first-class degree in Economics at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, tells TEMITOPE ADETUNJI how he achieved excellence despite dropping out of school in 2001.

My fondness for Economics grew when my late brother sought my help in Mathematics to aid him in tackling problems in Mathematical Economics. Through this, I came to realize that Mathematics has numerous applications in Economics, which sparked my interest in the subject.

I made the difficult decision to drop out of my program at River State University (formerly Rivers State University of Science and Technology) due to financial difficulties and poor academic performance, which was a painful experience for me. Unfortunately, my decision disappointed my parents and siblings, and I faced ridicule from both relatives and friends.

Despite my decision to drop out of the program in 2001, I remained committed to my studies. In 2004, I obtained a distinction in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering diploma. I also taught and motivated numerous students to excel. Although I knew I possessed the intellect for a university degree, I did not give up and persevered. Today, the result of my determination is evident for all to see.
