The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health in the state capital of Dutse released a statement, according to his statement, he said the outbreak has resulted in 80 out of 360 suspected cases, with 20 feared dead.
Dr. Mu’azu said,“It is with great sadness that we confirm the outbreak of meningitis in Jigawa state.”
“We have confirmed 80 cases and unfortunately, 20 people have lost their lives as a result of this disease.”
He however, said necessary measures to control and manage the outbreak are being handled by the government.
He continued and said, “We are working closely with local health officials and organizations to ensure that proper protocols are in place and that everyone in the affected areas receives the proper treatment and care they need.”
The symptoms of meningitis include rash fever, stiff neck and headache. The disease can lead to brain damage, hearing loss and even death in worst cases.
And the government has advised the people to take preventative measures to avoid contracting the disease, but fear has sparked among residents In the affected areas of the outbreak.
The measures to be taken as advised are; washing hands regularly, avoid close contact with infected individuals and as well as getting vaccinated against the disease, overall practice good hygiene.
In essence, Dr. Mu’azu said,“We urge everyone in Jigawa state to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families from meningitis.”
“We are doing everything in our power to control this outbreak and to ensure that everyone receives the care they need.”
Nevertheless, health workers have been deployed to the affected areas to provide support and treatment to those in need.
And the government has set up response emergency teams to monitor and respond to the outbreak.
