Captain David Mbamara, a leader of the Labour Party and a retired military officer, has accused Nigeria’s political class of attempting to bring the country to a crisis to impose their will on the people. This accusation comes amid the palpable tension that has continued to follow general election preparations across the federation in 2023.
The Labour Party’s candidate for governor of Imo State, Mbamara, said during an interview on ARISE TV’s “The Morning Show” a few hours ago that the same political class that was behind the crises that broke out shortly after the elections in 1964 and 1993 was also trying to destabilise the nation to undermine the will of the electorates in the country.

“INEC has performed admirably thus far. They would receive an 80% from me if I were to rate them. But the political class is the issue we have in this nation. I seem to recall that I once warned Nigerians about a repeating decimal that occurs every 30 years on this very same TV channel. And even as we speak, that repeated decimal is still floating above and around us. When the west opposed the NPC in 1964, a crisis in the western Nigeria House of Assembly resulted. And this resulted in the 1966 coup and countercoup as well as the subsequent 1967 civil war.
Exactly thirty years have passed since Chief MKO Abiola won that free and fair election, and it happened once more in 1993. Nevertheless, the political establishment in Nigeria resisted attempts to bring about peace. They undermined the will of Nigerians by working together with their military friends, which sparked the June 12 crisis. Abiola and Abacha died as a result of this, but God saved this nation with his boundless mercies. What has been crying for 30 years is still crying in 2023. The political class has been unwilling to transcend ethnicity. It might also interest you to know that they have rejected both the will of the people and the transformation of Nigeria into a full nation-state. They want a Nigeria that is under their control and through their prisms, but that is impossible. What happened back then will happen again if they choose to follow the path of 1993 and 1964. The indicator is concerning since racial and religious bigots are once again active.
