Why is Antenatal Care Important?
Monitoring mother and baby health during pregnancy is crucial. These are the reasons.
- Top Nutrition
Pregnancy nutrition is crucial for you and your baby. Raw fish, unpasteurized cheese or milk, and undercooked eggs may contain enzymes and proteins that harm the foetus.
The obstetrician will also prescribe vitamins and minerals for foetal growth. Folic acid, fish oil, multivitamins, calcium, and iron help the mother.
- Monitor Growth
Prenatal checkups allow the doctor to monitor the baby’s growth. Baby development indicates wellness. To ensure the foetus is growing normally, the doctor will propose ultrasound scans to assess his condition, size, and environment.
- Screening
Antenatal care screens mother and infant for pregnancy-related illnesses. High blood pressure and diabetes can complicate pregnancy and increase the chance of premature birth, thus the woman should be watched. High blood pressure can also lead to pre-eclampsia, which can kill the mother and baby.

- Proper Immunisation
Some immunisations are safe and necessary during pregnancy. Pregnant women receive the tetanus toxoid immunisation to safeguard them and their babies during birth. Pregnant women get flu vaccines because they get sick more. Plus, they can give antibodies to their kid to combat infections in the pregnancy.
- Test schedule
Testing is essential throughout pregnancy. Doctors prescribe tests based on their assessments. Laboratory tests can detect diabetes, HIV, Hepatitis B, and other STDs. These tests will also establish if the mother can deliver vaginally or if a C-section is needed.
- Prenatal Classes
Mothers and partners, especially first-time parents, may be advised to take prenatal classes. This helps people handle pregnancy and childbirth and prepare for parenthood. This allows the woman to learn about baby care and breastfeeding.
- Health Education
Obstetricians, midwives, and nurses educate mothers about health during antenatal care. This includes educating the mother on nursing, newborn care, and pregnancy health. In the third trimester, antenatal visits will be increasingly frequent, allowing the doctor to advise the woman on pregnancy care.
Womanhood is complicated during pregnancy. There is a lot to learn and do. Obstetricians help mothers cope and provide excellent pregnancy care.
