A lecturer at the Department of Dance Studies at the University of Ghana, Terry Bright Ofosu, has discounted the notion that traditional dances are for people who are not educated.

The 1989 National Dance Champion has adduced brainwashing by the colonial masters of the country as a reason most people shy away from our indigenous culture.

“Where we learn the traditional dances are normally in the primary schools and once we get to the secondary school people begin to shy away from it. And that is because of the damage caused by colonialism. It has actually severed us from looking our traditional dances as heritages that we must protect with all our might and with all our individual selves but we look at them as if they are for the unschooled persons,” he told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s A-Z.

He added that is the reason some people do not allow their children to study theatre arts the university.

He therefore called on the public to cherish Ghana’s traditional dances.

Terry also bemoaned lack of teachers are teaching aids for creative arts subjects at the basic school level.

According to him, although Creative Arts and Basic Design & Technology are taught at the basic school level, there are challenges.

He explained that these hiccups are militating against the preservation and promotion of our arts forms.

“Not until recently when we were tasked to look into the educational in the basic and senior high school, kindergarten, that we introduced the teaching of the arts. Performing arts, creative arts and design were put together as one that should be taught from kindergarten all the way. We’ve done that but it is not fully implemented because there is lack of teachers to do that at that level, so all the teachers have to do is to make do with what they have, the little knowledge they have in the arts to try and teach that and the books too are not ready yet.

We are going through a system where we are trying to change that but it is very difficult trying to implement this. Because within like an hour or 40 minutes you have to be able to teach dance, music, drama, visual arts and design. Within 40 minutes. That is the period for teaching. How is this going to work?,” he said.

Terry Bright Ofosu made the comment while discussing ways to preserve and promote Ghanaian traditional dance forms.

A-Z airs on Joy 99.7 FM every Saturday from 2pm to 6pm.

According to him, although Creative Arts and Basic Design and Technology are taught at the basic school level, there are challenges.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s A-Z on September 23, 2023 that these hiccups are militating against the preservation and promotion of our arts forms.

“Not until recently when we were tasked to look into the educational in the basic and senior high school, kindergarten, that we introduced the teaching of the arts. How is this going to work?,” he said.

Terry Bright Ofosu made the comment while discussing ways to preserve and promote Ghanaian traditional dance forms.

He added that another way of making the preservation possible is to have proper recordings of Ghana’s indigenous dances.

In the meantime, a policy framework is in the works by the Creative Arts Agency to establish a creative arts curriculum for Ghana’s education sector.

The Creative Arts education policy framework is intended to make students think in creative ways from the basic level to the tertiary and will equip students with creative skills for solving issues.

On April 14, 2022, at one of the meetings by the Creative Arts Education Committee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, tasked the committee to come up with a proposed bill on arts education.

“I’m hoping that we have some sort of a proposed bill before the end of the year to be implemented,” she said.

Currently, Creative Arts is taught as a subject at the primary school level, while pupils in the junior high school study Basic Design and Technology.

Ghana to leverage on funerals to boost local tourism – Tourism Minister

<![CDATA[

Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal has hinted at a potential shift in the country’s tourism strategy that could see the rise of “funeral tourism” as a means to bolster the local tourism industry.

While the planned initiative may not sit too well with some industry players, Dr. Awal believes it is a unique opportunity to showcase Ghana’s rich culture and traditions to the world.

Outlining his vision for “funeral tourism,” Dr Awal emphasized that funerals in Ghana were not just solemn events but vibrant celebrations of life that offered a window into the country’s diverse cultures.

According to him, showcasing these traditions will provide an authentic and immersive cultural experience for tourists.

“We will find funerals at places where there are tourist attractions. When they finish the funeral, the people will be served local dishes and drinks including sobolo so that when we finish, we will bus them to these tourist attractions.

Ghanaians love funerals, and it’s voluntary. When there is a funeral here, we will announce that we can go to Bonwire. People are selling Kente there, and when they go there, they will spend money.

“We are busing them for free, so when we go to that area, there are restaurants there; they will buy food; they will buy artefacts. They will enrich the local economy. So we will take advantage of funerals to deepen our cultural assets and thereby create jobs for our youth”, he remarked.

Interestingly, the Minister’s proposal has not been fully embraced with critics demanding a better approach to it.

In the views of such critics, turning funerals into tourism platforms may risk making commercial a deeply personal and emotional event.

Also, there have been concerns about respecting the wishes and privacy of grieving families.

Tory Lanez is fearful for his life in jail after being found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion, sources exclusively tell PageSix.

“Tory is scared for his life and safety in prison. He feels like he is an instant and direct target because of his celebrity status,” a source told Page Six.

The rapper arrived at North Kern State Prison in Delano, Calif., last week after being sentenced to a decade behind bars.

TMZ has reported that he’s being held in “Administrative Segregation” because of his high-profile status, which keeps him largely apart from other inmates.

According to the outlet, Lanez is “escorted to the showers where he bathes by himself,” and, “if he chooses to spend time in the yard, he’ll be the only one in the fenced-off area.”

“He stands in at 5-foot-3, so his size is definitely a setback,” a source. The insider added: “He is housed with real hardcore criminals, murderers. So he is really hoping that his lawyers will be able to continue to fight for his freedom while still maintaining his innocence. The whole thing is a mess.”

Tory Lanez mugshot.
The “Chauffeur” artist’s prison mugshot was released on Sept. 19.

Just this month, another inmate at the same facility who is reportedly serving sentences for multiple killings was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the untimely death of his cellmate. (He pleaded not guilty in the case.)

A former inmate at the same prison was convicted this month of attacking two staffers in 2020.

The 31-year-old rapper, Lanez, was sentenced to 10 years in August. He was found guilty of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the feet, after the pair left a party at Kylie Jenner’s home in Los Angeles in 2020.

Said our insider: “His family is concerned for him as well, especially his dad. He has been in contact with his family, and they are all trying to keep his spirits up.”

Tory Lanez current prison location in California.
Lanez is currently being held in a California state prison.

The source said of Lanez, “He definitely had his moments where he has teared up,” and that in jail he is, “realizing who his real friends are.”

TMZ reported that he will be moved from his current state prison home to another facility when authorities decide where he should serve the rest of his sentence.

Lanez pleaded not guilty to three felony charges in December, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm as well as carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

The recording artist has maintained his innocence, and stated in an Instagram post in August: “I have never let a hard time intimidate me. I will never let no jail time eliminate me. Regardless of how they try to spin my words, I have always maintained my innocence and I always will.”

He added, “In no way shape or form was I apologizing for the charges I’m being wrongfully convicted of.”

Lanez has vowed that he’ll continue to fight the case, posting that, “I refuse to apologize for something that I did not do. I’ve faced adversity my whole life, and every time it looked like I would lose, I came out on top. This is nothing but another moment where my back is against the wall, and I refuse to stop fighting till I come out victorious. Tough times don’t last, but people do.”

Reps for the rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, did not get back to us for comment.

Megan — born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete — give a victim impact statement in the case that reportedly read in part: “He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma… He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul.”

Writers Guild, studios reach tentative deal, potentially ending monthslong strike that ground Hollywood to a halt

<![CDATA[

The major film and television studios and striking writers reached a tentative agreement on Sunday after days of marathon negotiating sessions, the Writers Guild of America said Sunday evening, paving a path forward to end the historic work stoppage that has frozen production and paralyzed much of Hollywood.

“What we have won in this contract – most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd – is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days,” the WGA said in an email to members on Sunday. “It is the leverage generated by your strike, in concert with the extraordinary support of our union siblings, that finally brought the companies back to the table to make a deal.”

The terms of the agreement were not immediately known.

While the agreement still needs to be ratified by members of WGA, which represents more than 11,000 writers, this marks a significant turning point in the nearly five-month-long strike. The current walkout came close to beating the longest strike in WGA history, a 1988 strike that lasted 154 days.

“We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the WGA said in its message to members.

However, the tentative deal does not immediately end the strike.

“To be clear, no one is to return to work until specifically authorized to by the Guild. We are still on strike until then,” the WGA wrote. “But we are, as of today, suspending WGA picketing.” The Guild encouraged members to join the picket line for the actors’ strike instead this week.

The actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, has also been on strike since mid-July; SAG-AFTRA represents about 160,000 actors.

Both Hollywood strikes have been drawn-out and costly, with the nationwide economic impact of more than $5 billion, according to economists. Industries like restaurants, service firms and prop shops have also felt the ripple effects from the ongoing disputes and have had to cut staffing as a result. In New York, disruption of 11 major productions resulted in a loss of $1.3 billion and 17,000 jobs, according to Empire State Development.

The WGA could on Tuesday authorize its members to return to work before the agreement is officially ratified by the union’s members, it said in its statement.

One person close to the matter said that, as a result, writers could potentially be back to work in just days.

People familiar with the matter on Sunday night voiced optimism the studios’ agreement with the writers will also allow it to reach a deal with the actors.

WGA concerns

Revenue streams from traditional linear television have been declining, and streaming services – while growing – are losing money. Seasons for streaming shows also tend to be shorter, which means less work for writers.

The writers have said they can’t afford to live under the current economics and pay structure of the television and movie industry, with fewer job opportunities on many shows and lower pay for many writers who do find work. There are many successful, even award-winning, writers who are finding themselves unable to make a living at the profession anymore.

Writers are also concerned about the rise of artificial intelligence and want protections to ensure movies and shows are written by humans, not machines.

In fact, the use of generative artificial intelligence in production was one of the final sticking points, a person familiar with the matter said.

It’s been five months since veteran musician Kwadwo Akwaboah died and his son, highlife musician Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr. ‘dreads’ life without him.

Akwaboah Jnr. does not know how he will cope without his father around anymore explaining he had a very good relationship with his father who was also his best critic.

Describing the relationship with his father, Akwaboah Jnr. said, “I was closer to him than anyone else in the world. My dad was everything to me. With him now gone, who would be straight with me and tell it to me as it is? Indeed, it’s been tough without him and I am going to miss him greatly.”

“You see, what I had with my dad was so strong that I hear from him every day and I always run to him when something beats my mind. It will be hard to replace him because he was the best.”

“When it comes to my music career, he was there for me. I am who I am today because of him. I never released a song without passing it by him. He will literally critique all the songs I sent him and trust me, he was great at what he did,” the Obiaa singer told Graphic .

Akwaboah Jnr. revealed that apart from ‘Awerekyekyere’ remix he did with his father, there were a number of songs he had planned to do to work on with the late musician.

“Awerekyekyere remix was his song but I also had songs I wanted to feature him on and it is unfortunate he is no more. I wanted to do a collabo with my father on some selected songs from my repertoire, but that can’t be possible anymore” he added.

Giving details on his father’s funeral arrangements, Akwaboah Jnr. said there will be wake-keeping on Friday, September 29 at Trede, Ashanti Region followed by burial on Saturday, September 30 at Trede.

The final funeral rites come off after burial at Heroes Park, Kumasi Sports Stadium on September 30.

Songs he has to his credit are Hold Me Down, Posti Me, Hello, I Do Love You, Hye Me Bo, Mengye Mani, Number One, Love Unfair, Let You Go, Matters of the Heart, Enjoy, Picture, Password and Open Your Heart.

<![CDATA[

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Lagos State Council, has called for thorough investigations into the death of Afrobeat star, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The association also said the ‘nurse’ who allegedly injected the deceased before his demise is not a registered nurse.

The 27-year-old Afrobeat star, Mohbad, died on 12 September in unclear circumstances.

Following his sudden death which has led to outrage both online and offline, Nigerians called for investigations to unravel the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death.

The police on Monday set up a 19-member committee to carry out a discreet investigation which covers exhumation, autopsy, scene visit, medical report, records of suspects, and witnesses’ statements.

The nurse, considered a major suspect in the case has also been arrested, according to the police.

Not registered

In a statement signed by NANNM’s state secretary, Toba Odumosu, and sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday, the association said preliminary investigations indicate that the individual reportedly taken into custody by the police for providing care to Mohbad is not a registered nurse.

The association said it is closely monitoring the situation with keen interest.”

It also stressed the importance of professionalism in reporting and conducting the investigation which has gained global attention.

The statement reads in part; “Our preliminary investigations indicate that the individual reportedly taken into custody by the police for providing care to Mohbad is not a registered nurse.

“We emphasise the critical need to verify the qualifications and professional status of individuals before labelling them as healthcare professionals.”

The association noted that it is regrettable that Nigeria’s healthcare system faces significant regulatory challenges, “leading to the presence of unqualified individuals performing medical roles they are not trained for.”

It said to be recognised as a nurse in Nigeria, one must complete a rigorous five-year Bachelor of Nursing Science programme at a university, followed by an additional year of internship.

“Alternatively, one can undergo training at an accredited School/College of Nursing and become registered and licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

“We wish to clarify that the term ‘Auxiliary Nurse’ has no place within Nigeria’s healthcare system or its laws. An individual is either a qualified nurse or an unqualified individual performing tasks beyond their competence.”

Condolences

The association expresses its deepest condolences to the family and associates of the late musician, Mohbad, during this difficult time.

“We fully support the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and urge the relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice for him.”

The association called on the investigating authorities and the media to exercise caution and accuracy in their reporting during this investigation.

It said the association will not tolerate any misrepresentation of Nurses and the Nursing profession.

“We demand that all media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a Nurse take immediate corrective action to rectify their stories.”
