Students could go hungry after thieves stole groceries from school

About 320 pupils face hunger at Ncedolwethu High School in Crossroads in Peddie after thieves broke in and stole groceries worth R30,000.

Earlier this year, thieves vandalised the school and stole 14 computers. They also torched a neighbouring school.

A school staff member, who asked not to be named, said: “This morning we found our school storeroom wall damaged.

“Our month’s groceries worth R30,000 and two laptops were stolen. The damage could be more because we are still shocked, but officers from the Bell police station are here.

“The thugs seemed to have had enough time because the wall had three layers. And before that, to get inside the school premises, they first cut a big hole in the fence.”

“Fortunately, the food meant to be cooked for today’s nutrition programme was kept in the kitchen and the thugs could not steal it.

“But as from [Tuesday] there will be no food for the pupils. This means learning and teaching will be severely affected.”

The break-in occurred even while the school was still recovering from a burglary in March, the staffer said.

School governing body treasurer Vuyiseka Freddie declined to comment.

“I just heard about the incident. We will get back to you maybe tomorrow after we have met as a committee,” she said.

Ngqushwa municipality mayor Sanga Maneli expressed concern about school vandalism.

“It is becoming common for our schools to be vandalised and torched,” he said.

The mayor said another school had been vandalised in the same area. He appealed to community members to protect their schools.

Police spokesperson Majola Nkohli confirmed they were investigating the incident.
