45 927 students were stripped off from NSFAS funding for falsifying the information they submitted

The head of the National Students’ Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has slammed the head of the National Students’ Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

Mr. Ernest Khosa, chairman of the NSFAS board, told the media at a forum in Pretoria, yesterday, that the students were stripped of their funding after being caught in the act of telling lies when applying for funding.

He said these students are not ready to receive funding so they will not continue to support them because they will be breaking the law.

“We have been heavily criticized and said that we have no humanity because we took away those we had sponsored. After a thorough investigation that included SARS and the Auditor General, we conducted research on the sponsors and found that some of them should not be benefiting. We found out that they are falsifying the information they submit when applying. We had to quickly take away their funding because we should be supporting them.”

He said that others had come to apply using their parents’ information, if they were rejected they would use other people’s information.

“Our program was able to check that this person has used other specific information, and we rejected , so this second one is a fraud. That is why we have taken away their funding.

Student organizations criticized the fund for taking away funding from those who were already funded. In many institutions there were protests last week, complaining about the loss of student funding and the plan to directly pay student benefits through the new system. Khosa said that another problem they are facing is that the universities do not deliver the students’ information on time.

“We cannot sponsor a person whose registration information has not been received from the university. We are caught by the institutions with those who have not yet sponsored because they are the ones who have not yet provided this information.”

Khosa said that they have paid for a number of students under the new system and appealed to the bodies that work with them the university management association not to criticize them from afar and be willing to meet with them to resolve their complaints.

The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Blade Nzimande, announced his plans to put the local university, Unisa, under the administration.

Nzimande said this after the report of an independent investigator, Professor Themba Mosia, who found that there are things going wrong in the university that affect the management and use of the university.
