NANS Warns ASUU Against Attacks on FUTO Vice Chancellor

The Sun Newspaper reports that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a caution to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) regarding character assassination and personal attacks on the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Nnenna Oti.

According to NANS, ASUU members are allegedly engaging in negative campaigns against Prof. Oti, with the sponsorship of certain individuals who are dissatisfied with her leadership style and achievements, as well as her positive role in the last election. As a result, NANS is calling for her resignation.

Comrade Ezenagu Victor, the Vice President of NANS, released a statement in Abuja on Sunday, warning ASUU zonal members to refrain from such attacks on the VC or face potential unfriendly actions from the students, which may include mass protests.

Furthermore, NANS confirms that ASUU members are allegedly planning to destabilise the school through industrial disharmony, which could result in students spending additional time in school due to academic disruption.

Comrade Victor expresses concern over the vehement attacks on Prof. Oti, suggesting that they may be related to her , her transparent approach during the national assignment, and her role as Vice Chancellor.

He urges ASUU zonal leaders to focus on addressing internal issues within their ranks, such as alleged involvement in election rigging, sales of handouts, sexual harassment of female students, cultism, and sex-for-marks practises.

Despite the challenges, Prof. Oti has maintained a forgiving attitude and refused to engage in any arrogant behaviour. However, NANS believes that these attacks threaten the peace and tranquilly at the University.

NANS also highlights the potential negative impact of industrial actions on students, leading to prolonged academic years and increased school fees, particularly for postgraduate students who pay based on the number of years spent in school.

As a solution, the students suggest that the Federal Government consider proscribing ASUU, as they perceive the union to take pleasure in causing instability in the University system in Nigeria.
