Only 8 Muslims were chosen as commissioners by Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu, according to the Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC). According to a statement issued by the association’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the governor of Lagos State disregarded the diversity of the state while selecting his commissioners, in violation of a clause of the 1999 constitution.
Muslims, according to MURIC, contributed significantly to Sanwo-Olu’s success in securing his reelection by casting large numbers of votes in the general elections of 2023, but he chose to punish them by marginalising them. The list of commissioners was referred to as being illegal and illegitimate since it goes against the Nigerian constitution.
Even while Muslims make up a significant fraction of the population in the Southwest, Professor Ishaq said, they are marginalised there.
“There were 39 names on the list. But to our dismay, just 8 of the finalists may really be considered Muslims. We find it difficult to comprehend why the Lagos State Government (LASG) would use the cabinet composition as a weapon against Muslims. The inclusion criterion is not met by the ratio of 31:8. It fails the integrity test as well. Because Muslims in Lagos voted overwhelmingly in favour of Sanwo-Olu, this is a violation of trust. We convinced other Muslims to withdraw their opposition to the governor when MURIC in particular publicly came out in favour of the governor’s second term. The sentence is written.
