Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Rasheed Draman has stated that the current 8th Parliament has been unprecedented in Ghana’s history.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, July 23, Dr. Draman lauded the passage of new standing orders to guide proceedings in the hung parliament.
“This parliament has done something that no other parliament has been able to do. The new standing orders that are about to be implemented should be commendable,” he said.
His comments come after First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu described the 8th Parliament as the worst performing.
The Bekwai MP noted that the current Parliament has passed the least number of laws.
But Dr. Draman disagreed with that assessment.
He argued that Ghanaians are more concerned with the legislature tackling corruption than just passing new legislation.
“The levels of corruption we continue to live with government after government is what Ghanaians want a solution to and not new laws,” he said.
The 8th Parliament has been historic in some respects, according to some political analysts.
For the first time, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon, Alban Bagbin is from the opposition NDC party.
