Subsidy palliative: APC govt doesn’t care about Nigerians – Dele Farotimi

Lawyer and political analyst, Dele Farotimi said the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC-led government does not care about the ordinary Nigerians in its subsidy palliative approach.

Farotimi stated this while speaking in an interview with Arise Television on Friday.

According to him, the measures have not adequately addressed the realities and concerns of the common people in Nigeria.

The political activist described policy as a reflection of a disconnect between the federal government and the people, emphasizing that the APC lacks the will to improve the lives of Nigerians.

Recall that, in a meeting on Thursday, the National Executive Council (NEC) had agreed on palliative measures for Nigerians.

The NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and also attended by governors of the 36 states of the Federation, agreed that cash transfers would be done via state social registers instead of national social registers subject to state peculiarities.

This comes days after President Bola Tinubu had proposed to transfer N8,000 to 12 million poor households in Nigeria for a period of six months to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy on Nigerians.

According to the President, the money transfer to poor households would have a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna state, has described the proposed cash transfer policy of the Federal Government as a scam.

Sule stated this while speaking in an interview with Arise Television’s News Night on Friday.

The governor said, “My position has always been that, at this critical time, cash transfer should not be something that we should bring up, completely. I think that cash transfer for me, in my opinion, is a scam. Completely is a scam. I can be very certain about that, because who are you transferring the money to?

“Let me give an example, go and check the current statistics. Like I said, as the Chairman, Committee of Banking for four years in Nigeria, I oversight Central Bank, I oversight all the commercial sector of our economy for the last four years and I look at the statistics, I will be very firm on this issue and you can go and check it.

The Nigerian Army has launched a new military operation in Plateau state.

According to The PUNCH, launching the operation in the Mangu Local Government Area, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja on Saturday said the aim was specifically to end the spate of attacks and killings in the LGA and other parts of the state.

In July alone, over 200 people have been killed in sustained violent attacks in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

After addressing troops deployed to carry out Operation Hakorin Damisa, the Chief of Army Staff moved to a Pilot Primary school in the community to have a meeting with some stakeholders.

Earlier in July, the House of Representatives asked the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to declare a national emergency situation in Plateau over incessant attacks by terrorists.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance on the need for urgent intervention in the killings in some local government areas in the state.

The House further requested that Operation Safe Haven should identify and evacuate all cells used by bandits in the state.

The House mandated the Committees on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, Defence, Army, Air Force, Police, and Legislative Compliance (when created) to oversee compliance and report monthly until the situation was brought under control.

No crisis in APC, says Morka

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the resignation of its National Chairman and National Secretary does not mean it is in a crisis.

It also faulted rumours that the agitation for their successors had deepened the crisis, “insisting that the ruling party is “solid and “united.”

Last Sunday former APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore voluntarily resigned from office.

But the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka on Saturday in a statement in Abuja described the resignations of the two leaders as “a normal part of the democratic process”

According to him, “contrary to media reports, the resignations under reference only show the high level of institutional maturity and quality of its leadership that place the best interest of the party first and above personal egos and ambitions.”

Morka added that “the rapid and seamless succession, in acting capacities, to both offices exemplifies the cogency of its constitutional processes.”
