Gloria Sarfo Opens Up About How the Ghanaian Movie Industry Wasted Her Youth

Gloria Sarfo

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has recently voiced her disappointment with the movie industry in Ghana, stating that it wasted her youth. Despite winning the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 2020 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and her involvement in the popular television sitcom “Efiewura,” Sarfo expressed frustration with the lack of opportunities elsewhere in the industry.

In an interview with Accra-based Asaase Radio, Sarfo recounted the long hours spent attending auditions without securing roles. She described the experience as continuous and frustrating, spending hours at places like Afrikiko from 7 am to 7 pm without any significant progress. “The movie industry wasted my youth,” she lamented.

Sarfo attributed her disappointment to the casting process employed by Ghanaian movie producers and directors. She criticized their tendency to prioritize appearance over acting skills and passion for the craft. According to Sarfo, many producers and directors would simply spot a beautiful lady on the street and offer them roles, disregarding their lack of experience or commitment to acting.

While Sarfo refrained from mentioning specific names, she suggested that some well-known actresses gained fame through similar means. She expressed her reluctance to share her own negative experiences in the industry, fearing that it might discourage aspiring actors and actresses from pursuing their dreams.

Despite her disillusionment, Sarfo remains cautious about discouraging others from pursuing acting. She hopes that her story serves as a cautionary tale rather than a deterrent, urging aspiring individuals to continue pursuing their passion for acting while being aware of the challenges they may face.

Gloria Sarfo’s candid remarks shed light on the challenges and shortcomings of the Ghanaian movie industry. Her story serves as a reminder of the need for a more inclusive and merit-based casting process, where talent and dedication are valued over superficial attributes.
