The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST), has presented a cheque for GH¢100,000 to the University of Ghana towards the University’s ‘One Student One Laptop’ (1S1L) project.
Presenting the cheque to the school, Managing Director of BOST, Edwin Provencal said the gesture will enable as many needy but brilliant students have access to laptops that will enhance learning especially at a time when digital skills were essential in the world of work.
According to him, though BOST made some significant losses in the past and has made some significant gains from 2021, it was imperative for them to support and impart the lives of people as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility as a company.
“Whatever it takes to grow the human capital in this country, some of us are ready to assist, not only in cash but also in kind given the challenges we are aware some students face in pursuit of their dreams.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo who received the cheque on behalf of the University said the initiative is a three pronged programme which includes classroom modernisation, 1S1L with various components and hot spot comfort zone.
She said the programme which was inspired during her tenure as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University in charge of students and academic affairs was not fully achieved as result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to her, though the University had a learning management system in place since 2014, the beneficiaries were minimal especially at a time when it had to shut down completely for students to resort to virtual teaching and learning.
She therefore thanked management of BOST for the gesture and said the lap tops will go a long way to enhance the digital skills of students by making them technologically adept irrespective of the programmes they were pursuing while augmenting the schools digitisation drive.
The Vice-Chancellor who acknowledged the support of other organisations since the introduction of the programme also appealed to alumnus and other corporate bodies for support towards achieving the vision.
