Speaker of Parliament Suspends Voting of Ministerial Nominees

The President of the 4th Republic of Ghana, Pres Nana Addo Dankwa Akkufo Addo, earlier this year nominated some seven persons to occupy vacant ministerial positions in the country.

These nominees have been vetted pending their approval by parliament in order to assume full positions as ministers of state. As a requirement in the 1992 constitution conferred on parliament, the fate of this Ministerial Nominees was scheduled on the 24th March 2023, for secret balloting.

However, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, suspended the voting because the house could not form a dacorum. Majority of the members of both minority and majority causus were not present in their numbers to carry out this national assignment leading to the suspension.

Even though the Minority Caucus insisted on voting the speaker did not need to their plea as he walked out after suspending the house. On his way out the Minority Caucus continues to chant ‘we will vote’ as Mr. Speaker passes by.

A few minutes later the Majority Caucus also set in with ‘we won’t vote’ chant.

Voting is suspended to next week.
