Atsu’s wife revealed she had written a tribute to her husband and the father of her three children.

This was read out at his funeral today (March 17). “Lying before me today is the mortal remains of a beloved father and husband. I knew little that morning that God is going to call you home. In life, I loved you dearly. In death I do same. It breaks my heart to lose you.”

“You did not go alone for part of me went with you. Your love is still my guide, and though I cannot see you, you are always so full of life.”

Rupio also described Atsu as seeming immortal and how she saw his smile and his love in their children. “You are never really gone as part of you is within them.

You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. But as you always say, God wins. In love, your wife.”

The former Chelsea and Newcastle United player’s last involvement in the game was in the match between his club, Hatayspor and Kasimpasa in Turkey.

Atsu netted the winner from a late free kick, only hours before disaster struck. He made 65 appearances and scored nine goals for the Black Stars of Ghana.

Among those who paid tribute to the late football star John Paintsil who couldn’t contain his tears.
